The Incredible Hulk
Incredible is a good word to describe this movie. So far, it has gotten unbelievably mixed reviews. However, I would like to give a go at giving an unbiased opinion. So here goes….
First, the Hulk moves rather slowly. I believe this was almost unavoidable, since they really needed to properly setup the Hulk, where he came from, and what his driving forces are. We all have to remember that there are people out there, especially from the younger generation, that did not grow up with Hulk. So this character setup is almost impossible to avoid. Also, if you watch Ang Lee’s other claim to fame, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon you will notice that in amongst the unforgettable action, the movie goes really slowly. In the middle of Crouching Tiger, there is a 25 minute recourse to go back and setup the main characters boy friend. Otherwise we would have had no idea where he came from. Once The Hulk gets moving, it explodes for an almost 40 minute continuous action scene. Which, by the way, does not go too far. I really thought that once the action started in this movie that there was going to be some ridiculous mayhem going on. Everything was believable. From a Comic book point of view.
On that note, please remember that The Hulk is a comic book come to life. Similiar to Spider-man, accept with a 15 foot - 1,500lbs. Green Monster. Stan Lee, the creator for almost all of Marvels line-up of comic book characters, really did an unbelievable job creating a sensible monster. What do I mean by this? Well, The Hulk represents everyones inner rage. He is what everyone has in side of them but they can’t release. Through the magic of Biology, and some Gamma ray Interference The Hulk comes to life in Bruce Banner. I am not saying there are no holes in this concept, but it is truely an awesome concept.
On a lighter note. The action. The action in this movie is awesome. Once it starts, it gets better and better. Not only can The Hulk do whatever he wills, to helicopters, jets and army tanks, but he can also jump 3 miles in a single jump. I was really unsure how this would look, and how it would come across to the audience. At first, from what I could tell the audience thought it comical. Then, at least in my case, the feeling you got when he did it was “I WANNA DO THAT!!!”. The effects to go along with this movie are second to none, as it goes with human-like characters. Gollum, obviously is the best digitized characters to date, even surpassing The Hulk. But Gollum ain’t no human. The Hulk is at least “somewhat human”.
Ok, my numeric review is somewhat strange for this movie. So it goes like this:
Casting: Perfect. 5 out of 5
Acting: 4 out of 5.
Action: 3 out of 5. Needed a little more
Effects: 4.5 out of 5.
Story: 5 out of 5. I love this story.
Cinematography: 4.5 out of 5. My fav category.
Go see the Hulk…..even if it’s just to see him smash stuff up at the end.
