Uptown Girls

Uptown Girls
I knew Eliza wanted to see this one, so we went last night. It was almost like a private viewing, with only 7 or 8 people in the theatre (which is what you would expect for a Wednesday night). I actually enjoyed this movie. Brittany Murphy has really got on my nerves lately, but she wasn’t too bad in this movie. The only complaint that I have is that they tried too hard to setup her character in the beginning of the film, which was unneeded. Besides that, the acting by Dakota Fanning was great. In the movies she has done so far, she has been great. I look forward to The Cat in the Hat. This movie is a good date movie.

More than a Rain King - Counting Crows/John Mayer Concert

HOW AWESOME CAN A CONCERT POSSIBLY BE?

Well lets do the calculations.

Counting Crows = Favorite Band
Adam Duritz = My Idol

Counting Crows + Adam Duritz = UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE.

The Crows absolutely killed (in a good way) this concert. Man Man Man. I can’t even explain how awesome it was to see Adam Duritz and bandmates in the flesh singing some of my favorite songs EVER. Growing up with the Crows and listening to them non-stop for the last 2 years it means so much when you see them live and they sound better than they do on CD. You see how personal the Crows painful music is to Adam Duritz, you hear the pain in his voice, you hear the happiness in his voice when he is embraced by the fans. I’m so glad they played some of the songs they did. They came out with a cool pyschodelic backdrop that continually changed. They started off with “Rain King”. Then jumped around the stage and acted out the lyrics to everyone’s favorite (radio) Crows songs, but also slowed it up with a pain filled rendition of “Black and Blue” off my personal favorite album (actually tied with August and Everything After), “Hard Candy”. Especially touching was his extended version of “Round Here” which he mixed with a heartful “Goodnight Elizabeth”. They concluded with Hanginaround and Adam brought out his favorite band, Stew (also the opening act). This was really cool. Everybody was having a good time, they had their dogs come out and Stew even sang the second verse. The encore was a hotel story that he had in Scranton and a beautiful rendition of Long December. Adam got to show off what he calls his “rudementary” piano skills. THE COUNTING CROWS RULE … nuff’ said.

Then it was time for John Mayer. I am a big fan of Johnny Boy and I think “Room for Squares” is an incredible debut album. He didn’t have as much showmanship as the Crows. Pretty much just his guitar and him which was pretty freaking cool anyway. He is an incredible guitarist and he proved that with long guitar solos. He played a handful of new songs from his new album “Heavier Things” which is coming out September 9th, so check out for that. Let me tell you if the new album sounds pretty much like what he played, all you John Mayer fans are in for a real good year. He played a song called “Something’s Missing” which was incredible. It sounds like his music is more “grown-up” this time around, which is evident by the CD title and which he needs to do to extend himself into having a long-career. He wouldn’t be able to sustain multiple albums with the content he worked with on “Room for Squares”. He really was trying to be charismatic for all the teenage girls (and there were lots of them) in the audience. The ugly chicks really loved it, its amazing that when he calls the women beautiful that 95% of the ugly chicks start yelling. There was this one annoying girl that would yell in the middle of the song at the top her lungs .. man that was rough. Ayways Johnny Boy’s encore was “Back to You” which he did an incredible job on.

The sound at this concert was excellent. The instruments did not drown out anyones voices, which is pretty standard at concerts. Both of their voices sounded incredible and they are unbelievable live bands. It is so disappointing when you really love a bands CD and you see them in concert and you have no idea how any amount of technology could make them sound good. If anyone gets a chance to see the Crows live… TAKE IT. If they come back to Scranton I will definitely be there again so I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Jack S.W.A.T

I went to see S.W.A.T. last night. I was just a little bit disappointed. I wasn’t expecting the world but I was expecting more than was given.

Colin Farrell as usual handles his business in fine fashion. The other performances were fine besides Michelle Rodriguez. I really don’t like her so I may be a little biased. I think that Oliver Martinez really had fun playing the part of the bad guy. But the story was just too ehhh… and the action as well. I was expecting a lot more out of the “action” and not just a sequence of training sequences. I’m not saying the sequences of training were bad there was just too many of them and it took up too much time. Another part that was too long was the whole under the subway part. Nothing happened and it was anti-climatic. The fighting scenes were a little too dark and you couldn’t really tell what was going on. I’m just ranting now on little stuff but it was all stuff I noticed and kind of annoyed me.

Solaris
I rented the SOLARIS DVD. I really have mixed feelings about this movie, and I am going to try my best to explain my feelings without giving the entire movie away.
