DVD: Solaris
I rented the SOLARIS DVD. I really have mixed feelings about this movie, and I am going to try my best to explain my feelings without giving the entire movie away.
First off, the overall story is nothing revolutionary. Going to a far away planet, and seeing your dreams become reality. This can been seen in movies like Michael Crichton’s Sphere, and others. SOLARIS has hints of Kubrick in it as well, with the long silences that prevail throughout the film. I am a big fan of silence in films, ala M. Knight’s movies. However, this movie was not tense, scary or overly dramatic, so the silences were boring, not edge-of-your-seat. Speaking of M. Knight’s movies, Soderbergh tries to rip off M. Knight’s twist ending with the revelation that the character has at the end of the film. Doesn’t quite pack the punch of The Sixth Sense by any stretch of the imagination.
I don’t want to give this movie a star rating, only because alot of people out there will absolutely hate this movie, and alot of people will actually really like this movie. I, however, am on the fence. But, if you want to see George Clooney’s ass - for an unbelievably uncomfortable amount of time, rent SOLARIS.
