Back in Black!
Jack Black is back in action in his new movie, the “School of Rock”. I was amazed at the overwhelming criticial praise of this movie, but after seeing the movie it is obvious why it would be accepted by so many people.
It is a concept we have seen over and over again. A wild teacher teaches stuck up students to live life. An immature adult is taught life lessons by children and vice versa as he enlightens people to his lifestyle. We’ve seen the good (Dead Poet’s Society) and the bad (Sister Act 1 - 20) and the mediocre (The Emperor’s Club). Where does School of Rock fall into that mix, up with the best of them. Jack Black amuses the audience throughout. He does nothing exceptionally crazy or disgusting, which is the norm in today’s comedys. No, it is replaced by funny faces and interaction with the well-acted and musically gifted children. All of the children held their own as well as Mike White (screenwriter) as the supportive but easily walked on friend, Joan Cusack as the uptight principal, and Sarah Silverman as the girlfriend of Jack’s friend which he views as the enemy.
Jack convinces the students they must rise against the man (parents, teachers, etc) with rock and roll music. You can tell where the story is going but it doesn’t matter. The story is just too feel good and Jack Black is just too funny and charismatic that you can’t help but love this movie. The whole audience stayed through the entire credits and there were claps to be heard.
I recommend this movie to everyone, children to old folks.
