Howie Day is back with his 2nd album (3rd if you include his live album and dvd), entitled “Stop All the World Now”. Before I continue with my review let me just say if you haven’t heard Howie Day’s first and self produced album, Austraila, and you are a fan of singer/songwriters pick it up NOW. The simplicity of the music and the beauty of the songs are amazing. What makes this CD so amazing is that the simplicity really shows how great his voice can be and what really makes this album special. Now, with that out of the way I will continue with my review.

Howie Day’s new album is incredible. It really shows this 22 year olds maturity. You would think from listening that he was much older, but alas he is yet a young’n. The lyrics are still top notch. But I have some beefs with this album and they are similar to the beefs that I have with John Mayer’s new album. What made Mayer and Day so great was that they could make simple and at the same time complex songs with just a guitar and their voice. Both of these artists have succumbed to the curse of being studio-ized. Howie Day has a rabbid following and the way that he rose to fame was an incredible marketing story. He was then picked up by Epic Records. From the production of ex-Verbe members, the songs while polished are too produced. They lose some of what I loved so much about his first album. I enjoy the 25 piece orchestra in some of the songs but with the majority of the songs using this it becomes a little repetitive but overall I think it is a welcome addition to his music but I just wish that he had more of the simple songs. The only other problem with the album was that he took studio-ized some of his songs from Australia, mainly She Says, which is one of Day’s most loved and best songs. I wish he would have left them alone. The songs are all really really good. While listening I sometimes I forgot I was listening to Howie and thought I was listening to Radiohead or U2, which is a good and bad thing. I can’t wait to hear from this kid in the future as I think he will get more and more popular, he deserves it. I have yet to watch the bonus DVD.

Rating: 5/5
Even with the beefs I still really really enjoy this album and I am sure the more I listen to it the more I will like it. Howie Day continues to amaze and I think that Austrailia deserves more than 5 stars so I’m basing my rating on that album. Oh and for anybody who wants to hear a great acoustic song download Howie Day w/ John Mayer, “Sorry So Sorry”.

I also downloaded my first album from the Apple Music Store. I bought Thrice album, “The Artist in the Ambulance”. I am very pleased with iTunes for Windows and look forward to buying more albums and songs from there. By the way, the Thrice album is insanely awesome, I recommend any punk/emo/metal/rock fans to go check it out.
