A Perfect Circle - Perfect Album?
I had bought this The Thirteenth Step awhile back and then left it in my brother’s car and didn’t really get to listen to it much. I got it back and on my way to my dentist appointment I decided to pop it into my cd player for the 40 minute drive.
WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! This album is absolutely incredible. I can not tell you how much I LOVE this album. Maynard and his posse have created an album different then Mer de Noms, a mellow melodic masterpiece with this album. Not to say that MDN is not a masterpiece as well, but it is a heavier masterpiece. This album is much tamer than anything Maynard has ever touched. But the mellow sound gives way to lyrics full of pain and meaning, without having to yell. There are some heavier songs, particularly the breathtaking “Pet”. I had my stereo up really loud and when I first heard the guitar riff I honestly got chills. It was scary yet beautiful at the same time. I think Maynard captures the essence of this album perfectly with one of the lines in “Pet” when he says, “Go to sleep to the sound of the war drums”. The drumming in this album is typical of Tool and APC but the melodic tones and singing is absolutely unbelievable. I really can’t say enough about it. Songs like “Halo”, “Blue”, and a “The Nurse Who Loved Me” are incredible. “Nurse” is particulary unique and is mellow as my friend Timmy would say “like whoa”.
I have heard people argue that this album was too weird and just plain not good. EXCUSE ME PEOPLE. People that think that Good Charlotte is good. This album is a breath of fresh air, no I should say a gasp, in airwaves flooded with pollution such as talentless bands like All American Rejects and Simple Plan. Maynard has created a work of art. This talent is something not seen everyday. This album was created with vision, creativity that I couldn’t even imagine (how ironic is that), and a mind above the average. It is not just something that is copied from another artist. It is not a pre-packaged piece of junk in a crowded market of more packaged junk. Think Blink and all their clones some of which I have already named. Think of all the boy bands that are all the same.
To quote Maynard: “Pay no mind what other voices say, they don’t care about you like I do”. I truly believe him. With this album he proves that he does care about his fans more than the average band.
The only wish that I have from this album was that there was 15 tracks. The reason I say this is I wish there wasn’t three interlude type tracks (I consider Vanishing an interlude even tho its three minutes long) and only 9 songs. I wish there was 12 full songs with three interludes.
Just like every other Tool or APC album this album is 5/5.
