This movie could have been good. And it some ways, it was - but in most ways it was not. I think the main problem with this movie, is that there are too many characters to develop.

Take Spiderman for example. Spiderman developed the characters of Peter Parker and of Norman Osborn, long before they even introduced Spiderman and The Green Goblin.

In this movie, there is no introductions, short of the Invisible man, which isn’t too hard to figure out. Throughout the movie you are left filling in the gaps of the characters past(s). Which is all well and good, because most of us know who these people are, but it doesn’t make for good story telling.

Besides that, this movie had a decent plot, that they started to use very well, and then just left it. The main plot is that an evil madman, The Phantom, is pinning most of Europe against Germany by attacking both sides, trying to start a World War in the year 1899. This way, he could sell his “ultimate weapon” to the highest bidder. For fear of spoilers, I will not tell you what this weapon is.

Overall, I’d give this movie a 2.5 outta 5. It was a fun film, if you like to just watch a little action, and the characters were “neat”. However, the effects were very sub-par (besides the Venice scene). Mr. Hyde also looked good, on occasion. But those occasions were when it was Jason Flemyng in costume.

If you’d like to see this story, yet would not want to see it botched up by hollywood, take a look at The LXG Fansite.
