Link Rules
Wow. Far too much thought has gone into this, however….
Myron made a comment stating that: “But for the love of god, the dashed underlines have got to go. And don’t get rid of underlines either. Links should be blue with a solid underline. That’s the way the web was designed. It’s also how almost every graphical help system works. It’s what users know and expect.” However, I was quick to snap back without giving it much thought, even though I thought I had. Well, after reading a post by John Gruber explaining the purpose of his latest project Markdown, I got to thinking about his statement: In other words, when was the last time you realized you were completely wrong on a matter of opinion?”.
So, after giving it some thought, here is what I came up with for our “Link Rules” - and hopefully this will be satisfactory for most of our visitors.
TUG’s Link Rules
1. All Links will be underlined in some fashion, at all times.
2. Solid underlined links are locations that you (the current visitor) have not yet viewed.
3. Dotted underlined links are locations that you (the current visitor) have already viewed.
4. When a link is hovered, some type of highlighting or styling will occur to denote that the text ( or image) is ‘hot’.
5. Added: All Abbreviations will be underlined with a double solid line, and have a ? mark come up onMouseOver to give it’s meaning.
I certainly hope this is ok.
