Tool - Lateralus CoverSeeing that I have a different mood every week and that I listen to something else every week I decided to make a weekly post called “Song of the Week”. This is the song that I listen to the most every week and trust me there is always one that I listen to more than others. For the inaugural week I have decided to go a little bit ol’ school.

Song: Ticks and Leeches
Artist: Tool
Album: Lateralus

Why This Song?

A simple three word answer would suffice: ITS ******* TOOL. Enough said to most but I will elaborate. This song with a running time of over 8 minutes is an angry little tune about someone who seems to suck the life right out of you, even when you try to show compassion. Many of us have had this feeling but few of us could convey it perfectly musically like Maynard and mates seems to accomplish. One of the main reasons why I enjoy this song so much is that it is reminiscent of old school a.k.a ANGRY Tool. This song is different from the rest of Lateralus, which features more of a melodic singing style. Maynard’s shrieking screams are throughout the entire song and he sounds AWESOME. There is a two minute lull in the song but that is replaced by a brutal frenzy of pounding drums, guitar and screaming. His lyrics (’Workin up under my patience like a little tick / Fat little parasite / Suck me dry / My blood is bruised and borrowed / You theiving — / You have turned my blood cold and bitter / beat my compassion black and blue. / Hope this is what you wanted. / Hope this is what you had in mind. / Cuz this is what you’re getting. / I hope you’re choking.’) are more straight forward and more angry than anything on the rest of this album and they are brutally honest. This song reminds me most of their first three albums, which are three of my favorite. Can’t wait for their new stuff, they have never disappointed and hopefully they will continue their streak of phenomenal albums.
