Operation: Barebluebones

Notice anything different? Probably not, since the majority of this site’s readers only subscribe to the RSS feeds. But I assure you, something has changed. Operation Barebluebones was something that I wanted to do for a little while. A very simple styled version of TUG.n.

The old site had too much going on, and too much to keep up with. My main goal with TUG.n is a very simple blog with worthwhile content. The content will not really have any particular rhyme - besides the “projects” found on the top left hand side. So, clearing away all the junk is something that I’ve been wanting to do since WordPress 1.2 came out. Operation Barebluebones was also partially reinspired by Douglas Bowman’s simple redesign. Starting over with a clean slate will now allow us to focus our attention on content, not design, and on building some really useful features to this site, instead of eye-candy. Not that our “look” was ever that refreshing anyway.

If you find any big problems, let me know. The archives page will be updated shortly, but right now I’m tracking down some worthwhile documentation on the WP 1.2 template tags. Since there site is going up and down due to recent popularity, it’s been tough getting anything accomplished.

Addendum: Some have asked me if TUG.n was going to stay as you see it right now, and the answer to this is, No. This is a work in progress, but I needed to get “something” up in a barebones type scenario to try out some of the stuff I wanted to do. The codebase and stylesheet of the old TUG.n was not only garbled, but was hard to update. The current template is 100% WP 1.2 driven, and is easy to upgrade for future versions. Part of the reason I changed in the first place. Oh yeah, you should never append your posts via your comments, so I am now moving this into the post as an addendum.
