Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon Album ArtWell, I didn’t technically lie. I said I was gonna give you a heavier song for SOTW this time around. Well it is a heavier song but not as heavy as some would like, but then again Enya could be heavier than Frou Frou. I’ve been in a high-schoolish “punk” mood this week. And at times like these I could go to something gay like Good Charlotte or New Found Glory (sorry to their two fans that I offended), but instead I went with something similar but something far more clever than anything they could ever write. Which brings me to Brand New, who although, especially in their early album, used to sound very similar to these previously named bands, still have geniune song-writing talent. It took some time for me to realize this tho. When I was first introduced to them I gave them little to no chance of being open minded to them. They sounded so typically “punk” that I couldn’t take it, but after listening to their second album, which is incredible, I gave their first album a chance and realized that their were some lyrical gems in there. Jesse is very witty and clever even when he WAS following typical teen radio conventions. Let me clear up my thoughts, their latest album sounds NOTHING like those previously mentioned bands, and everyday I’m sincerely grateful for that.

So without further ado I bring you my Song of the Week.

Song: Logan to Government Center
Artist: Brand New
Album: Your Favorite Weapon

Why This Song?

First off it is a catchy tune but without the lyrics that seem fitting to me, although by far not the best on the album, I would have never chose it as SOTW. I even gave Colin flack for it because he had it on his playlist because I felt it wasn’t a good representation of the talent of Brand New. However, the lyrics just seem like a mirror to my feelings when it comes to missed opportunities. (’Do you still consider me the boy you laughed with, or that you learned to live without? / I suck. I know I’m late. I know you waited. / You wouldn’t get me on the phone. / You couldn’t make me not alone.’) Open doors only stay open for so long and then they are closed in your face, and who knows when they are closed if they will ever come open again. You can feel those sentiments oozing from this song and I think Jesse does a great job in capturing that loss and the thought (’Wait for summer to become wrought with lips (my wishful thinking). ‘) of the possiblity of getting it back. Ahhh, wishful thinking how naive it is.
