TUG.n Project MOAM
I’ll start off by apologizing for any errors you receive over the next few days, as this redesign is a work in progress. I haven’t had any “errors” - but there are definitely some glitches which I am working hard to fix. For instance, if your viewing this site in Internet Explorer, there are a few features which you may never see. Which, by itself, isn’t a bad thing. But I’d like to make all of TUG.n’s features available to everyone.
MOAM stands for Made on a Mac. This is the first design that I’ve completed 100% on the Macintosh platform. I’m extremely happy with the results, but am looking forward to streamlining my processes as I have done so many times on Windows. Over the coming weeks I will describe how I’ve done some of the various things on this site, but there are still a few features which I haven’t released yet - so I will wait till they are out the door.
If there are any serious errors that you come across, you can IM me at: cdevroe on AIM.
Welcome Jason Seegert
You’ll notice that we have a new Author thumbnail making it’s debut with this layout. Jason Seegert is going to start authoring some Macintosh, Cisco and various other related posts. He has been thinking about his first post, and although it’s a little OT, and not the norm for TUG.n - I think it will prove to be an interesting read. Jason has his own blog, which he will still be posting to - so be sure to subscribe to his site. We’re all looking forward to hearing from you Jason.

If you’ve never heard of Douglas Bowman before, than perhaps it’s time to get your head out of the sand. Mr. Bowman is a leading-edge and well respected designer both in graphical, and information design. To quote him, he “believes design should simplify and facilitate our everyday life.” His site, which is extremely well designed and very easy to use, lends itself to good readability.
What makes this blog readable?
Numbers don’t lie
Perhaps numbers do lie, but so far I haven’t met any that do. Recently, I’ve had a few experiences which have led me to the conclusion that numbers don’t lie. This is probably one of the strangest posts I’ve ever authored, but stay with me.
IP Addresses don’t lie
Last week Zach was nice enough to fill my mind with worthless bits about a guy that, back in 2000, claimed to have come from the future via our past. Sound strange? Well, I was intrigued enough to give a few web sites a read which were based, not-so-loosely, on this Time Traveler’s claims. I have to say, a lot of what was debated back in 2000-01 was very compelling. Be-that-as-it-may, I thought it entertaining to join an IRC channel, now over 3 years since this Traveler’s last correspondance, pretending to be the one John Titor. Not being able to track down the original IRC channels that this fella chatted in, I decided to pop into my usual hang-out #wordpress.
My original goal for this was merely to boulster a charge out of a few of the normal visitors of #wordpress, and to see if I could make this hoax last 7 days. It went rather well, and I succeeded, but only for 2 days. On the third day, one of the people in the channel decided to figure me out. It wasn’t hard to figure out who I was, as previously stated, I am no IRC aficionado. That being said, I had my laughs. Masquerade, blogged about his findings and posted some of the chat transcripts.
Clothing Sizes don’t lie
Fat, also known as cellulite, is squishy. I’ve got over 20 pounds, more than I should, of it - so I can make this statement from an experts point of view. I have a bone to pick with women that don’t realize that they are not teen runway models. Allow me to explain.
Lately, the trend in young-women’s fashion, at least in my little place on the globe, has been hip hugger jeans with tight t-shirt tops which show off your mid-section. Most men, including me, would say that they are fine with this fashion on the whole. However, when a woman decides to adorn herself with said attire, we men (yes all of us) ask that you first consider the size of jeans your supposed to be wearing. Yes, we know, your going to lose weight. But come on, we don’t need 10 pounds of blubber hanging down on each side of your body to be staring at us in the face when we ask you to get us a shirt from the top shelf at a clothing store. We don’t want to see a belly-ring that looks like it peirced the blow-hole of Shamu. And, almost certainly, we never want to see what would happen if your belt, which is 2 sizes too small and 5 holes too tight, broke. I’m thinking it would look like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow when New York City was flooded due to Polar Ice Caps melting.
This has been a something that I’ve been thinking of saying for a while, and really I have no way better to put it. It’s not that these women are bad looking, or that I have something against women that have a few extra pounds, because I’m not saying that at all. I’m against women that, when they look in the mirror, see someone that is 35 pounds lighter, has a record deal with Sony, and is marrying an extra from You Got Served.
Permanently burned into my retina
For as many people that asked me about my mac software of choice, even less asked me about what my desktop now looks like. Ok, so no one has asked me yet, but I figure your all just biting your nails with anticipation. My current desktop is “themed” by various Lord of the Rings icons and wallpapers.
The icons that I am using come were skillfully created by Dave Brasgalla, who posted them to the Icon Factory. Whether your using Mac OS X or Windows, 25 icons of this icon set is available for free. These icons have incredible detail, and can fit almost any purpose. Another icon set by Dave, which has 91 icons available, is The Matrix Rebooted - and they are also unbelievably detailed. With 91 in the set, there is no way you can’t find what you need. You’d do well to visit his company’s website if your a developer and you’d like to get a nice set of icons for your application’s interface.
Not surprisingly, the wallpaper I am currently using, was also created by Dave. He offers these desktops for free in various sizes and formats. Although I’ve downloaded all of his desktops the one I’m currently using comes from his Tolkien Desktop set, which is the symbol for the world of the Loriens. Dave is obviously a big Lord of the Rings fan, and for good reason, as the Lord of the Rings (even before the movies) has influenced and inspired many of the best designers.
My Dock consists, currently, of the following program icons: Finder, Safari, Mail, Proteus, Conversation, NetNewsWire Lite, iCal, itunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, skEdit 3.4, Transmit, Acquisition, TextEdit. To the right of the divider is a shortcut to my Applications folder, the Developer folder and my Mac Office 2004 folder. To the right of that is Mail minimized, and of course my Trash bin. I can feel your enthusiasm abound since you now have a glimpse of my Dock.
The various icons on my desktop are shortcuts to my SMB network shares, my hard drive and my temporary folder. The top most icon, The One Ring, is my main Hard Drive on my iMac. The next from the top, depicted by The Book of Mazarbul, is my main sites folder on my Windows machine. Next, depicted by the Palantir of Orthanic, is my Shared Documents folder on my Windows machine, which is used as a drop point for the network. The second to last icon, More Lembas Bread, is in place temporarily as a share to the My Pictures folder on my Windows machine. Once all the photos from my Windows machine are imported into iPhoto, I will no longer need the Lembas Bread. For a long time now, I’ve kept a temporary folder on my desktop to eliminate any mess. In this case, the Workshop folder, which is shown as the Tolkien Folder icon, is my current desktop temporary folder.
Now you’ve seen what’s been burning a whole in my eye for the last week or so, please feel free to Trackback or link to posts describing your desktop. Or, if you’d like, just link directly to a screenshot of your current desktop.
Mac software of choice
Since my recent transition from Windows XP to Mac OS X, some have asked what major software choices I have made. Although my article on my switch explained a few various choices, here are some of my choices, which are subject to change, and what their function is.
Modest Mouse - The View
To be honest, this week I could have choose a bunch of Modest Mouse songs for my Song of the Week. Why? Because the whole new CD is unqiue, original and lyrically intriguing. This CD is a breath of fresh air in radiowaves filled with garbage. You don’t get a real feel for the band from the single “Float On”, which I would consider a happier and peppier song than most of what you will find on “Good News for People Who Love Bad News”. Most songs are about depression and have a very bleak world view, which is fun to hear about sometimes even tho you may not personally feel the same way. Oh, and if you are thinking but are unsure about giving Modest Mouse a chance, act on it.. you won’t be disappointed.
So without further ado I bring you my Song of the Week.
Song: The View
Artist: Modest Mouse
Album: Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Why This Song?
This song, despite its upbeat tempo and catchy sound, is a very very sad expression of one man (0r band’s) view of society. He basically feels that throughout all man’s ideas and inventions we are basically still the same and have not really progressed as much as we would like to think. (’For every invention made how much time did we save? / We’re not much farther than we were in the cave. / For every good deed done there is a crime committed. / We are fixed. / For every step ahead we could have just been seated. We are fixed. ‘)
Another reason why I chose this song was the chorus. This features one of the best choruses on the album, rivaling “Ocean Breathes Salty” in cleverness. (’As life gets longer, awful feels softer, and it feels pretty soft to me. / And if it takes sh*t to make bliss, well I feel pretty blissfully’) . MM has some equally good, if not great, dark songs, such as “Bury Me With It”, “Bukowski”, “This Devil’s Workday” and “Satin in a Coffin”, to name a few. I know this band has been around for awhile and they are just starting to catch on, but they are catching on for good reason, for their music, talent and their creativity, not because they are manufactured teenager with a huge rack, CHECK THEM OUT!!
