Never-before-seen footage
I’ve expressed my disgust towards “the unrated gimmick“, so I think it’s time for some praise. There are some film-makers out there that understand how to portray a Special Edition DVD, and Peter Jackson is a prime example.
Coming December 2004 The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’s Special Extended DVD will be released. Instead of utilizing “the unrated gimmick”, which I don’t think would work for this type of film anyway, Peter Jackson and Company have simply stated exactly what it is they are offering. Here is a snippet quoted directly from the official Lord of the Rings Web site:
“A new version of the final installment in the epic trilogy! The Academy-Award® winning film now has 50 minutes of never-before-seen footage incorporated into the film…”
Simple, concise and accurate. Although stating that this footage is unrated could be considered accurate, it would be misleading.
