Remy Zero - Villa Elaine/Garden State SountrackThis week I’m going back to the basics. I’ve been in the mood for a much softer music this week and even listened to a little Billy Joel. If I was picking a Drunk Dead Beat Dad of the Week I may have picked him, but instead for SOTW I picked Remy Zero - Fair. This song again is off of the Garden State Soundtrack. Obviously I am a fan of this soundtrack and movie (can’t wait for the DVD). The movie and soundtrack are both excellent. I highly recommend almost every song off of it to anyone.

Song: Fair
Artist: Remy Zero
Album: Villa Elaine and Garden State Soundtrack

Why This Song? I don’t know what it is about this song. It seems happy and sad at the same time. It feels like you want to cry and smile in the same listen. Very few songs have either effect on me, so to have it do both is pretty amazing. I believe part of the reason that it is so moving is because of the movie and the scene that accompanies it in the film.

The lyrics are top-notch and the soft music are perfect compliments of each other. The lyrics are a little abstract and seem a little contradictory. However, what’s great about these lyrics are that they can mean different things to each individual listener. They do not exclude anyone from relating to them, as some artists do, by being so abstract that only they can relate to them (think Mars Volta, while cool sounding, what the **** is he talking about?). It mixes from pain (’Hey, are you lonely? / Has summer gone so slowly? / We found the ground, / but that damage was done. / It’s cold as you fade into the sun. ‘) to happy (I think) (’And all my words were bound to fail. / I know you won’t fail… / see, I can tell…). I’m not sure if it’s sarcasm or what, but in the end it doesn’t matter. I have my ideas on what they mean even tho someone else might feel the complete opposite. I apprciate songs that are written like this (think Tool, APC). Everybody thinks they mean different things but don’t isolate a single fan base. They are still appreciated by many . Any songwriter that can accomplish that while still making amazing music is alright in my book.

Trust me, this song is a great one.

P.S. Just think this guy was married to Alyssa Milano, that, by itself, is enough to make anyone a fan. ;-)
