Song: Sleeping to Dream
Artist: Jason Mraz
Album: Tonight, Not Again - Live from Eagles Ballroom

Why This Song? I’ve been in a softer mood this week and decided to go with one of my favs, Jason Mraz. For the two of you that have never heard of Jason Mraz, he is a very talented singer, songwriter, guitar player, and opera singer (trust me). I didn’t want to pick a song that everybody probably heard so I went to his live cd, “Tonight, Not Again”, and picked my favorite song from that.

I had an opportunity to see this guy live, so take my advice on this, if you have the opportunity to see him do it. It is well worth the price of admission and there are times when the surprising power of his voice will leave you breathless.

This song is very close to my favorite Mraz song and comparably matches the awesomeness of “Absolutely Zero”, another previous SOTW choice. They are both great songs, so if you just recently started reading SOTW listen to both of them now.

This song is both subtle and incredibly powerful. His voice ranges from good to great to ridiculously awesome. I’m telling you, if you don’t believe me about his voice then go see him live. I challenge you not to be amazed by it. Also, I would recommend listening to this song at a high volume so you can get an effect that is closer to the real thing.

Lyrically this song seems very personal and very real to him. (’I found myself in the riches / (Your eyes, your lips, your hair.) / Well you were everywhere / But I woke up in the ditches. / I hit the light and I thought you might be here / but you were nowhere. You were nowhere at home. / As I lay me back to sleep / Lord I pray that I can keep / Sleeping to dream about you‘) I feel these are some of the best lyrics he has written to date and wish they were included on “Waiting for my Rocket to Come”. However, it wasn’t so the live version will just have to do.

Also, an FYI there is another live version of this song from a live album called “Sold Out” that isn’t quite as good but he does put a different twist on it.
