Transfering songs to iPod causes iTunes to freeze

If you have any experience in the following, please read on and see if you can help me out with this.

Eliza has a 4G 20Gb iPod named Abu. A really great little iPod, and having it has been nothing short of a musical blessing. About 2 weeks ago, iTunes started freezing whenever I wanted to transfer any new songs to it.

I was almost certain that it was a problem with the iPod since iTunes functioned flawlessly besides. However, I ran the iPod restore using the iPod software. After that I was able to manually transfer any amount of files I wanted to the iPod. Create, edit and delete directories on the iPod, and even manually transfer music files to the iPod. However, I was still unable to transfer songs, via iTunes, to the iPod.

So I decided to reinstall iTunes to see if my installation of 4.7.1 was “bad”. After trashing iTunes from my applications folder, I also trashed all of the preferences and receipts found in my Mac library. I then downloaded a fresh copy of iTunes, reinstalled, and let iTunes do it’s thing with getting my Library back in order etc.

Hoping beyond hope that it was this simple, I attached the iPod via Firewire and iTunes opened automatically showing the iPod to have nothing on it. I decided to create a playlist that I would use to manage the iPod’s contents. Then, I selected iTunes to automatically transfer songs in that playlist to the iPod.

Previously, when this problem started, iTunes would freeze with the message of “Transfering 4 of X to Abu”. Since I restored the iPod and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes it started off good. In fact, I was almost certain that the actions I took had solved the problem. Once iTunes got passed “Transfering 50 of X to Abu” I left the room to get myself a victory beverage. To my disbelief, when I returned, iTunes was frozen on “Transferring 88 of X to Abu”.

Which leaves me in my present state. An incredible iPod which I can transfer files to via Finder until I am red in the face, yet I can not use iTunes to do the transfering (which is by far the most convienant way to do this).

I’ve done a lot of noodling and Googling, but I have yet to find anyone that has similiar problems with the same set of circumstances and yet remains unsolvable. Some have had problems using USB when the battery on the iPod is low (duh!). But that is not my problem, obviously.

Any help, would be greatly appreciated.
