The Shins - Know Your Onion
I know I always say this, but I mean this I’m okay.. trust me. Sorry, had to give a quick shout out to MCR. Anyway, I’m seriously going to try to be honest and make the Song of the Week a song posted every week. The weeks just seem to fly by and I don’t even realize that I haven’t posted one.
Song: Know Your Onion
Artist: The Shins
Album: Oh, Inverted World
Why This Song? The Shins are a catchy little band that make light sounding pop songs that have lyrical bite. They sound “light and fluffy” on the surface but have real substance to compliment the style. “Know Your Onion” is just one of their songs that fit into that mold.
This is a song of meaning to every person trying to figure out who they are and what makes them happy. No one really knows anything except that its a struggle at times. A cliche concept conveyed with unconventional and creative lyrics. (‘Lucked out and found my favorite records / lying in wait at the Birmingham mall. /the songs that i heard, the occasional book / were the only fun i ever took. / and i got on with making myself. / the trick is just making yourself.’) I personally love that verse of the song. Music is one thing that I truly enjoy and helps me muddle through the rest of the crap that sometimes gets piled on me. (‘But when they’re parking their cars on your chest / you’ve still got a view of the summer sky’). With the good there is the bad, accept it and “make yourself”. If you fret about your problems you aren’t really accomplishing anything besides having people getting pissed at you for trying to make them feel sorry for you.
Alright class, I’m done with the life lesson. If you want to hear a catchy little jingle (or jingles) then check out this song or pretty much any Shin’s song.
