Flickr’s would-be gift

I know this topic is going to get blogged a ton, but I wanted to jot down my quick thoughts on Flickr’s recent “gifts” that they gave out to those who bought Flickr accounts during their BETA (pre-Yahoo!) period.

Myself being one of the relatively few who purchased a Pro account during Flickr’s first months received double the subscription duration, double the upload limit per month and 2 free pro accounts to giveaway.

Many people have said that they may not need the extra megabytes, but that they thought that the subscription length being increased was very thoughtful of Flickr. On the contrary, in that regard; Flickr isn’t giving away anything. Their subscription costs, per year, have dropped by just about half. Meaning that if your subscription duration increased by double - they gave you exactly what you’ve paid for. Sure, its definitely nice of them to make good on that - but they are necessarily giving you anything at all. They’re simply keeping you, and thousands of others, from getting pissed that you paid double what all new users have to for a Pro account.

To Flickr, thanks for the upload limit increase, and thanks for the Pro accounts. I hope for nothing but the very best for you and your adoptive parent Yahoo! Now where is that printing feature?
