Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree

Song: Sugar, We’re Goin Down
Artist: Fall Out Boy
Album: From Under the Cork Tree

Why This Song? First off, I have had an ear infection for nearly two weeks now, so I really haven’t been listening to too much music. This has been hell for me seeing that is pretty much all I do. However, I think I took my hearing for granted so I have made a resolution to lower the volume of my music to “Reasonable Level” rather than “Ear Bleedingly Loud”.

When I heard that Fall Out Boy was coming out with a new album I was immediately excited and intrigued about if they could pull off an album near as good as their previous, “Take This To Your Grave”. That album was full of irresistable pop-punk songs that begged to be sung along to, no matter how immature or silly. The lyrics had a biting and smart-ass feel to them. Every song was pretty much bitter and angry but sounded like they were made for the radio.

I know, I know. I hate the radio and I hate bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. There is one fundamental difference between Fall Out Boy and these bands however. Fall Out Boy never claim (or I’ve never heard it) to be anything other than a pop-punk band that writes lyrics about issues. They play music and they never claim to be dark and goth and so “punk” and so deep. FOB don’t cut themselves or talk about killing themselves or hate their parents. It’s not that I hate every band that addresses these topics. Its the fact that bands like GC claim to be “deep” and act like they are the saviors of punk music. News flash…. YOU AREN’T. Get over yourselves. You are kid’s that play music. If you want to make pop music, then SO BE IT. But be proud of what you do, which is make music to make money. I’m sorry GC, but you have made some of the most uncreative, nausea inducing pop music of the new Millenium. You aren’t the Ramones, you aren’t Rancid, you aren’t even up to par with crap like Bowling for Soup. Don’t act like you are God’s gift to music.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. I can’t take another kid walking around with dyed black hair, acting punk, and claiming that GC is their role model, its music people and its not even good. They talk about bling bling and irrelevant crap more than most rap artists.

I’m serious this time, I’m done ranting, back to FOB. Is it as good as TTTYG? No, not in my opinion. However, there were some astoundingly catchy songs. The catchiest of them all is “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”. It’s still the typical FOB “I’m jealous but I still want you” mentality. The chorus however is perhaps one of my favorite in recent memory. It’s a bit cheesey but I can’t stop listening to it.

It’s not so much the lyrics I love about the song, altho I do enjoy them. It’s the way they sing the chorus. FOB’s lead singer, Patrick Stump, has an incredible voice, which is something you don’t find in most of today’s music, especially for the genre. He also keeps coming up with new ways to make it sound cool. He sings pretty much each song differently.

Check out this song. If you hate it because its too pop too bad. I will still like them. I have no qualms with pop songs, just people who claim to be anti-pop and turn around and make exactly what you’re against.

Thank you, honestly, for giving a decent and positive review of the new album. With the exception of people like Jason Tate at AP.net who have been friends with FOB for a few years now, everyone except for the mainstream execs seems to be giving them so much crap for this album. I enjoy it every bit as much as I enjoy Take This To Your Grave. I had the whole thing memorized in two or three days because I just couldn’t stop listening. Fall Out Boy is genuine and honest and they don’t deserve all of the people who used to “love” them so much turning their backs the moment people latch onto them. It’s rather sickening, but now I’m ranting and going off on my own little agitated tangent. Case in point: Thank you. You are right and educated in your opinion and not an idiot.

One thing is Fall Out Boy is really good, but how dare you put down Simple Plan they are the best band ever, there so down to earth and not poser punk people, they do address issues in the real world and are just like FOB. If you cant see that than you need help, serious help. They dont think of themselves as the saviors to punk music, they do this cause that is what they love, there just 5 canadian best friends doing what they love to do. SP is like the bast band ever, FOB is second, and GC is third. o-yeah, GC dont think they r the saviors of punk music eithier, take a look at thier lyrics, they dont talk about only death, and they dont do it for money, they do it because they LOVE it. Well thats all i gat to say so bibi……..

Simple Plan whine in EVERY SINGLE song I have ever heard from them. If I wanted to listen to nasal whining I would watch re-runs of Family Matters. They honestly make me want to vomit.

I think Joel from GC should take lessons from his girlfrend, Hilary Duff on how to make a decent pop song. That was just a joke, I think her songs suck too but I think they are better than the talentless garbage GC puts out.

Sorry, that reply was a little immature but I’m just trying to tell it from the standpoint of all GC and SP fans.

Hey meme, I noticed you have the lyrics on your site. I also noticed that you said it took awhile to find them. If you want to find lyrics for your favorite songs I would recommend either Song Meanings or Sing 365. While these sites may not be 100% correct all the time they seem to be the closest. Also, if they are wrong they usually post corrections if the mistakes are pointed out.

Chris Fehnel on June 25th, 2005 1:20 pm

  27. Gravatar

Hey, I love FOB but I also LOVE GC and SP. You shouldnt judge them because that is being un-punk. Who said they are too far into the punk thing? They are who they want to be so whats wrong with that? They talk about real issues and are easy to relate to. To the person who said Sp just winnes in all thier songs THATS NOT TRUE! Half of thier songs are lively and are about the “i dont give a crap what you think” additude. Dont call ppl posers because that is being a poser yourself. Try to not be as judgmental! I use to think Avril was a poser but ive come to realize she can do whatever she wants and i cant stop her so i stopped calling her a poser because i know NOTHING about her. I still dont like her music but at least i dont go around calling her a poser and saying her music sucks a$$.

    Veronica K on June 27th, 2005 12:47 am

  28. Gravatar

Veronica: I never used the word “poser”. I really dislike that word. I don’t care if they are or aren’t. I dislike them regardless.

I also don’t mind Avril. Certainly she claims to be punk and then is a complete pop artist. No biggie, I can accept that, because her music is a bit respectable. However, Good Charlotte’s and Simple Plan’s music does suck a$$, as you say. If anyone can say that “Cars and Money”, “Rich and Shameless”, “Perfect”, “Shut Up”, and “Welcome to my Life” are GOOD songs should be slapped in the mouth while having their testicles shocked. These bands are a disgrace to an already disgraceful pop scene.

thank you so much for putting out this great review of Fall Out Boy’s “From Under The Cork Tree”. It kind of upsets me that Fall Out Boy are “big shot talent(s)” get it? I’ve been listening to them since waaaay back then. Since “evening out with your girlfriend”. But its about time these guys made it big. They totally deserve it and are changing MTV and the radio (i hate the radio, it kills it).Anyways they’re new cd is definantly more mature and different than TTTYG. Each song has a different beat, different guitar riffs, different melodys and the guys are big now. As long as they don’t start to play on KIIS FM, life is good. They’re AMAZING in person, and treat each and every fan, new and old ones, with great respect. Other bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are WAY too pop than punk. Fall Out Boy balances out with the guitars and drums. When Good Charlotte & Simple Plan & Yellowcard (what a joke..) started, they were dead to begin with. Best wishes to Fall Out Boy!!…

I don’t normally recommend Fall Out Boy’s Evening With Your Girl until after someone is an established FOB fan. If you listen to that album you really have a horrible impression of how FOB sounds. I do recommend it to hardcore fans who has to have ever album made by a band. I like it because of the difference between “Calm Before the Storm” on that album and TTTYG. Also, the record label that was released (re-released as well) are known for being scam artists so I would never buy that album, I would download it.

Also, I can’t believe after all this album talk no one mentioned their INCREDIBLE acoustic EP, “My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Tongue”. That would be my highest recommendation for the more unknown albums of Fall Out Boy.

OK i don’t wanna sound bitchy but….fuck simple f’ing plan…they can go fall off which is what they will eventually do. They’re all about MTV & i’m sorry but that’s fronting the scene. i’ve studied punk and i have down reports abot punk music. there is like 27 forms of punk music and to compare Fall Out Boy to Simple Plan in the first place is dumb as fuck. For a band to be labeled punk is a lot of respnsibilty on their parts. to advertise your music on MTV w/ out being in the scene before is just fake, take hawthorne heights for instance, they’re all over mtv right now but for those of us who have a connection w/ punk music have been hearing their shit for the past year b4 any of you fake ass posers have. Dudes name is pierre c’mon bitches you don’t know shit about punk music you want punk meet Mikey Way from MCR in person there’s a fucking punk listen to some sublime-they’re fucking punks reggae but still way more punk than those faggots from simple plan will ever be…

Were you too busy at the University of Future Punk Writers to take an English class? It’d be a crying shame to see the “reports on punk” that you have “down”. Perhaps if you had “down” more Vocabulary lessons you would know that the F word is merely a seasoning to your final recipe. Not the main ingredient, or in the case of your entire comment, the arsenic that unfortunately found its way down all of our unsuspecting throats. Kudos on not sounding “bitchy”, by the way. I can see that dictionaries were not offered at the U of FPW’s bookstore.

Hey Brittany, I’m guessing you are talking about the chorus. He says:

“We’re goin down / down in an earlier round / and sugar we’re going down swingin’ / I’ll be your number one with a bullet / a loaded god complex / cock it and pull it”

I hope that clears up the argument. :)

Great review for this album and i totally agree on Good Charollatte. Some bands out there have there music alright but none lik Fallout Boy….recently i have not been able to stop listening to sugar we’re goin down due to the fact i have been having relationship problems but still this is a great album thanks for letting me be heard and great review…

    Thanks NewCumberland.

John, there is a big difference between GC and FOB. You might not like FOB but they don’t “suck”. I dislike a lot of music that doesn’t suck, it’s just not my taste.

However, bands that suck are the ones that are talentless. You cannot deny that FOB are talented. They have some of the best lyrics in the genre and Patrick can genuinely sing. You can’t say the same for GC so therefore I will continue to criticize seeing as they are utterly worthless and have zero redeeming qualities as a band. I’m not saying I have any problem with the members of the band personally, they could be cool guys. As far as music goes they have about as much substance as Skittles mixed with Crisco with a side of bacon fat.

And I don’t just mean the latest album..check out the others too. ‘TTTYG’ is amazing….I personally prefer ‘FOBEOWYG’. Oh and of course the great ‘MHWABTBTMT’ So….yes….and if i’m correct it’s “Patrick Stump’ not ‘Patrick Stumph’….and the correct term for “poser” is “poseur” you poseurs..LOL, Just Kidding….. ;D

Hey, I love that you gave this album a good review. I like it around as much as you do, too. My favorite song by FOB is NOT “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” as most peoples’ here is. No, that is my second favorite by this band. My all-time favorite song is “Grand Theft Autumn”. That song truly rocks my world. And you’re totally right about SP and GC. In my opinion, they suck. They’re posers. And they seriously need to tone down the “omg i punk goth an cool” act. And did anyone catch them on the MTV Video Music awards? They rocked.

I think it’s funny that you FOB and GC and SP little pop kids are arguing as if either of you actually listen to punk. If you knew what punk was you wouldn’t be listening to bands that complain about their parents or their girl friend that just left them. FOB is a POP band, they have no connection to punk. I hate the term pop-punk. There is no such thing as Pop-punk and the closest thing to it would be bands like the Adicts. Punk is anti-pop and has always been so. Anyone who wears a GC, SP, or FOB shirt to a real punk show would probably get thrown the hell out. It’s also funny that the only people who I ever hear using the word poser (poseur, or which ever other way you idiots want to spell it) is actually just some middle school kid who thinks that wearing exclusivley black and putting on a bunch of eye liner is really cool and really punk. Get over yourselves and look into the history of punk. It didn’t just start with Green Day in the 90s (gasp!!!!!) It started a long time ago and was completely different than the music you are trying to pass off as punk today. Join the underground or stop using our name for your horrible music.

That’s Funny Guys: I never claimed that Fall Out Boy was punk. I think they are labeled as pop-punk, which I would never consider to be punk music. They don’t live the punk lifestyle and/or act punk. This wasn’t me claiming that FOB was punk whatsoever.

Nor do I claim that I am a true “punk” fan. I don’t mind the music, but the most punk I have gone is early Rancid, which I’m sure could draw laughs from true punk fans. I don’t know the roots of punk nor do I particularly care, but I enjoy FOB, plain and simple. I would never call them a true punk band tho, so if that is how you take what I wrote I apologize for the misunderstanding.

wow. you people arguing about what’s punk or not need to chill the heck out. music, by nature, is constantly chancing, hence the classifications for it become more complicated as time goes on. personally, i like fallout boy. I don’t know that that makes me a poser, since i’m not posing as anything. i also like the ramones and the clash, which are considered punk bands, right? so what does that make me? i get the feeling that you all just feel like you want somewhere or something to which you can belong, so you have to form these little musical cliques to make yourselves feel special. i totally agree with the article, except, no offense, but the author could have definitely done a better job of being respectful to Gc and sp fans- i dnon’t like them either, but artistic merit is a very subjective thing. of course, the whole thing is an opinion piece, so the author can say what he wants, but opinions need to be based in actual fact, not just what you want the facts to be. peaceout

I used to love Fall Out Boy. Their old CD was pretty kickass. Now they’re a bunch of sellouts to poser 12 year old dumbasses who are like “OMG I HEART FOB 4EVA!” and who probably don’t even know the meanings of most of the new songs. I bet they, and half the people that are reading this don’t even know that Pete Wentz isn’t even the lead singer of the band. They changed from their old stuff to the new stuff just to get famous. Maybe they were considered pop-punk on Take This to Your Grave. But now, it’s all a bunch of mainstream junk. I mean, honestly. If you do like the new stuff, that’s awesome. But personally, I miss the old stuff.

I like Fall Out Boy. Sugar, We’re Going Down isn’t one of their greatest songs though.
I don’t like Good Charlotte, nor do I like Simple Plan, though I do find it funny how worked up some people are getting over this whole thing.
Classifications = blah. They’re not important; they don’t define a person and the certainly aren’t worth all this hullabaloo.
If people think Good Charlotte are punk, let them.
If they think Simple Plan whine, that’s their opinion.
If they like Fall Out Boy, good for them.

@Dan: I don’t consider this music punk. I don’t care about classifying music per se. When I said they are pop-punk I am just using the term loosely because that is how they are perceived. Trust me, take a look at my past/present/future songs, I don’t hold what I like to a genre. If the music is good, then it is good. Fall Out Boy to me is a band. They aren’t a rock band, a gospel band, a punk band. They are just a band, I like their music, and the rest can be left up to debate to people who care about “punk” music more than I, because I know I am not a reliable source to tell you what “true” punk music is.

To everyone who argues about that FOB or GC or SP is punk, you’re all wrong. Punk music is DEAD. If you want real punk music, go listen to the OLD stuff, like Misfits or Ramones, and you’ll see what punk is all about. Sorry if someone has ranted this before, I’ll be honest and didn’t read the whole string, but there have been enough people here at the end to justify me saying this. I personally don’t like any of today’s “pop-punk” bands (which in itself is a contradiction of names). In fact, there’s not a lot of today’s bands I DO like, although there are a few gems. Everyone these days is either pop-punk or emo / screamo (and God do I hate MCR, I can argue this for years, that’s another topic though). So sorry to break your little bubbles, but this music is NOT punk, nor is it even close.

Fall Out Boy has a long way to go as far as vocal maturity. I have been taking voice lessons since I was 5 years old. Patrick the lead singer has the potential to do amazing things but he blunders it by trying to belt it using his lungs instead of his diaphragm. I love the beat and the words from those I can make out, but I have to say I am more easily frustrated by listening to them. Vocal talent is lacking, rhythmical breathing is nonexistent. Just listen top dance and count how many times he takes a breath. That is not normal and shes a complete disrespect for talent in the music Industry. And you wonder why the RIAA is losing sales.

But anyway, I wish I had heard of Fall Out Boy from the beginning, I used to be so ignorant to the music world, until I finally got Much Music and the first thing I saw on it was the Sugar We’re Goin Down video and I instantly fell in love with Patrick’s voice…(plus, he’s hot ^_^) It makes me sad to think of all the years I missed out on Fall Out Boy. I don’t think the debate over what punk is has much merit. If you like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, it doesn’t stop you from liking Fall Out Boy, or vice versa. I used to really like Good Charlotte, and I don’t like them so much anymore. I really like Fall Out Boy now, but so what? Why set up these barriers and stick to one genre? Just enjoy what comes out and don’t be ashamed if you do. The worst thing I can think of is that people will lie about what they like just because of the general mentality. Half of the people that say they don’t like Ashlee Simpson or Good Charlotte have never even heard them and haven’t made that decision for themselves (Ashlee Simpson is crap though).
