Although I’ve never been to Gnomedex, I can see from the Flickr tag of Gnomedex - that this year was a big success. However, what makes a conference like this successful?

After listening to Adam Curry’s keynote, which is also now known as Daily Source Code episode 200, I can tell that many great topics were covered at this year’s Gnomedex. Content syndication and podcasting seemed to prevail at the conference. Curry likened the conference to Woodstock in 1969. Strange comparison? Perhaps, but he made it sound pretty convincing. Listen to his keynote for more on that.

Microsoft debuted RSS capabilities of IE7 which is due to ship with Longhorn. I am a Mac Zealot, but really it did look like Safari. However, I don’t consider this a bad thing. Now all the people that switch from Longhorn to Mac OS X will have an easier transition - since Microsoft is mirroring much of what Apple has done.

iTunes 4.9, also part of the Gnomedex discussion has been rumored for release tomorrow. We’ll see what effect that has on the not-yet-mainstream media that’s being syndicated all over the Internet.

So it is the range of ideas and the relationships created during these conferences which can lead to great things being done in technology that makes a conference like Gnomedex such a success.
