King Kong trailer

Written by Colin Devroe on Monday, June 27th, 2005 at 8:30 pm. Colin is the Technology Evangelist for Viddler.com and lives with his wife and two cats in Childs, Pennsylvania.

The first trailer for King Kong debuted tonight on TV and online. The trailer was broadcast on every NBC station and affiliate, including Bravo, simultaneously. This has never been done before, and early estimates said that it could reach as many as 1.9Million viewers via the NBC broadcast.

Volkswagen.com has also archived the trailer, which I’m sure will give out those statistics as soon as their site sees a let-up in traffic.

My first impressions of Kong based on this trailer are strong. Jack Black seems to be a perfect choice, even though I can’t get any of his Tenacious D songs out of my head. However, after watching the original 1933 version of King Kong, I see that the role he is playing is definitely a weird fellow. Jack fits perfectly, from what I see in the trailer.

Kong looks incredible. There are limited shots, and not much motion shown in this first trailer, but from what was shown Kong is definitely the best looking CG character to-date.

Near the end of the trailer you will notice a silence when Kong is about to take on the T-Rex. I hope this remains in the final-cut of the film. Most directors would flood this scene with music - but really there is no need for it. If you’ll notice in Lord of the Rings there are several instances Peter Jackson (director, Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong) uses silence instead of music to give you an eerie feeling in your stomach. Again, I really hope that same silence makes the final cut.

Ok, now I’m going to try to download the trailer so that I can get another glimpse of what will become one of the biggest movie releases in 2005.
