My 12-inch iBook
When I first considered getting laptops for Eliza and I, I was worried about getting the 12-inch iBook. I always thought that the smaller the screen the worse the user experience.
I was wrong. The 12-inch iBook just might be the perfect size for mobile computing. Screen real estate, although useful, is not really as needed on Mac OS X as it is on any competing operating system. Using a combination of Spotlight, Expose and some of the best Keyboard shortcuts in the bizz, I am able to find files, open and switch between applications and navigate between multiple open windows. The production increase from these features are second-to-none.
Screen size aside, the iBook is not only elegant, but incredibly rugged. I can say from experience that the 14-iBook is not near as nice as the 12-inch iBook on many fronts, including rigidity. The 14-inch iBook does indeed have a larger screen, but this gives you no more actual real estate than the 12-inch, since its the same number of pixels. So 1px is still 1px, it is just that the pixel is slightly larger on one than the other.
Very few people have complained about Apple batteries to me, but I figured I would address this anyway. I know, Apple has been recalling batteries for numerous products. But when you are producing numbers like Apple has lately, on machines that are totally reliant on batteries, this will happen. However, I’ve had nothing but good experiences with anything I’ve ever boughten from Apple. The iPods and iBooks that we own all get excellent battery life. The iBooks actually exceed my expectations regarding battery life, in that I’m getting roughly 5 hours or so of continuous usage out of them.
The stickers? Oh, almost forgot about them. They worked out quite well, and I am happy I put them on. Eliza wasn’t happy with her stickers and so she did something about it.
In conclusion, I highly recommend the 12-inch iBook for anyone that wants ultimate portability and yet still retain the ability to be able to get real work done.
