Attack of the Stickel
I’ll let Mike defend himself here. I guess he got in a rough car accident or burned his hand and face while trying to burn kittens or something.
Rumor sites are like children
Rumor websites, more specifically Apple rumor websites, are to me, the children of the internet. It doesn’t matter how many times they are wrong they will never admit it. They always point out the things they were right on. Just once I would like to see a rumor site say they were wrong and they should have pulled their collective heads out of their butts.
I can understand why they always want to be right, everyone hates being wrong. The thing that gets my goat is their smugness. Even with some of the most outrageous rumors you can think of these websites will act as though they’ve never posted anything wrong. It’s always, “we weren’t wrong, our source had confused this product with another upcoming product or feature set.” I say that’s a load of crap.
If you’re in the news industry, as the rumor sites claim they are — especially when they’re getting sued by Apple — do all the fact checking that is possible. When that’s done, you put your story on the line, without holding back — at least most of the time — and see what happens. If you’re wrong, say so. Newspapers may hide their corrections on some obscure page but at least they print them.
Maybe I’m just posting this because it was a rough weekend. Maybe I’m just bitter. In reality, it’s probably just because I’m on this big responsibility/accountability kick lately. Feel free to ignore this little rant, I should be back to normal soon.
Using and customizing Front Row
Front Row, which comes preinstalled on all new iMacs, allows you to view your photos, videos, and music with the use of a remote control from across the room.
I’ve been playing with Front Row for the better part of a day on my iBook (shhh!) and I can definitely tell you its made for the G5. A few things of note is that while using Front Row iPhoto and iTunes will be started in the background should access to their libraries be needed. Now you see the need for the G5 processor. I thought my iBook froze when I tried to access the latest episode of LOST through it.
Oh, and before you sue me Apple - I’ve already uninstalled it. And I’m recommending that anyone out there that would like to try out Front Row - do so only if you have a G5 with a decent amount of RAM. It isn’t Front Row itself that hogs memory - but the fact that other applications open “behind-the-scenes” that hogs the memory.
Kyle Jones has put together a nice little tutorial, complete with video, on how to customize your installation of Front Row with your own graphics and titles. Very cool Kyle.
Inconsistent icon previews in Mac OS X
Icon previews, for those of you not “in the know”, is when you can see a thumbnail of the image or video of the file within the Finder or perhaps on your desktop.
I’m finding that OS X is either inconsistent with its icon previews or I’m doing something horribly wrong. I want to see previews of all images and videos. I would rather not simply see the icon for a file, especially on my desktop.
If I save a JPG from iPhoto to my desktop on my iMac, I see a thumbnail of the image as the actual icon for the photo. Awesome. Exactly what I want. If I then drag that file from my iMac to my iBook’s desktop - the preview disappears and it becomes an average document icon. This would make it appear as though this is a preference issue, so I start to play around with my preferences. Under view options, I have the ability to “show icon preview”. Turning it on does nothing, as far as I can tell.
Is there something I am missing? Please send me any suggestions you have to fix this.
Retro series: Session 5 - Chris will crush you

Another beauty from the webcam archives, Chris is demonstrating his ability to crush you! Seriously, maybe he has some insight into what he is doing here - and I will allow him to edit this article if he’d like to - to explain himself.
This animation is made up of 3 consecutive webcam snaps.
Help via video chat
Apple recently started supporting help via iChat AV on their support page. I have not used it, so I have no idea if it works or not - but someone wrapped a business model around that idea.
Flavor Sofa (no idea where this name comes from) focuses on helping people connect, and be compensated for helping people out via iChat AV. Say you are extremely good at dicing onions without tearing - you can help someone out via video chat and actually be paid for it!
I’d actually consider doing this for some very high-level things like database development, high-end programming needs and various other things. Only because I would only want to spend the time if I was going to be able to bank 30 minutes to an hours worth of help. Any takers?
