The uber geeks

Have you met any celebrities lately?

I have. For those of you that don’t think meeting famous people is a big deal feel free to check out the latest song of the week, everyone else, let’s talk.

Friday started out pretty tame. My roommate had given me prior notice that she would be hosting a surprise birthday party for a coworker. That was fine by me since I could just sit in my office and turn up the music if the company started to annoy me — and believe me it happens with this group.

Shortly after everyone showed up the decision to order pizza was made, and really, what’s a birthday party without pizza right? Anyway, pizza is consumed, drinks are made and enjoyed, and cabs are ordered. It was decision time for me. Should I join this ragtag band of misfits on their whirlwind adventure to a seedy little bar for some karaoke or should I stay home and have a quiet evening to myself? Right, where are my shoes?

Other than having one of the slower — in both senses of the word — waitresses in the bar the evening was going well. The karaoke didn’t start until after the Calgary Flames lost to the Chicago Blackhawks — which was a bittersweet win in my opinion. The evening was going very well aside from a few people getting a little overzealous with the ass grabbing.

As an aside, I suppose I should have been happy about the ass grabbing since it was my ass being grabbed. The problem I had with it was the person doing the grabbing. I definitely could have lived without that for the rest of my life.

Getting back on topic, friends and strangers were singing — some good, many bad —, everyone was drinking, good times were being had by all. Then the night started to slow down. Our waitress was coming around less and less, the singers were getting worse and our boredom level was getting higher.

Shortly after our decision to leave was made, masterminded by me of course, I was trying to rally the troops. As anyone with drunk friends may know it was a very difficult task. I had finally arranged for everyone to ask for their bills and we were making progress. Then the next singer came on stage. This was the complete and utter downfall of my plan to leave. I’m glad it happened though, since the series of events that followed would lead to the picture below.

The song was Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and the singer was given a threat by my roommate whether he knew it or not. The threat went something like “If he wrecks this song I’m going to kick his ass.” The music started and shortly after so did the singer. He was performing and singing quite well in fact. My roommate was pleased so she actually turned around on the dance floor to watch.

Both of us thought the singer had a familiar face but neither of us could place it. She turned to me and asked if I knew from where. I replied with a “not yet” but as soon as she turned to face the singer I remembered. Not 2 seconds later I was asked again by my roommate where we knew the singer from and who he was. My response was simple, “Yes we know him. He’s the guy from S.W.A.T.”

That was the end of it. I was greeted with the typical “No way. It can’t be.” After a second look her doubts were put to rest. It was indeed Jeremy Renner. After that it was a flurry of “Get out the camera!” and “Take my picture!” followed by goofy poses in front of him singing.

Once he had finished the next song was announced and my roommate tried to accost Jeremy as he left the stage but wasn’t fast enough. The next tune was an Elvis song but we were to busy talking about how Jeremy Renner just sang. The second singer was doing a great job on the Elvis song and we were so into the moment that everyone was cheering him along. Then I got that all-to-familiar turn around from my roommate. I looked at the singer and looked at her. She started to open her mouth to say something but I cut her off with a “Yes. That is Sam Rockwell.”

That was how I met Sam Rockwell. What did you do last weekend?

As previously stated, Sam Rockwell is the man. I’d have loved to have met him as well. One of my favorite actors.

That’s cool. They are both good actors.

My celebrity experiences have been pretty limited. I saw a couple 76ers a few years back. Then, I said “what’s up” to Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin and got his autograph. When walking in New York, I spotted Jerry Seinfeld, and although I didn’t actually “meet” him because I didn’t want to bring attention to him, the people I was with went up to him to double-check if it was really him. Sure enough, it was.

I met Horatio Sanz from SNL when he came on campus a few months ago, and then I met Kevin Rose (TechTV) two weekends ago.

That’s wicked Paul. Horatio Sanz is hilarious. Ben Burnley would be awesome to meet as well.

I should Flickr up the picture of me and Dave Chappelle.

I’d have one of me and Jon Stewart too, but the stupid woman who took the picture dropped my friend’s camera and broke it.

    Bitches get stitches.
