Delicious Library 2.0 wish list
Delicious Library 2.0, if I had to guess, will be released either at MacWorld in January 2006, or just after. So, since thats only about one month away, I figured I’d weigh in on a short wish list that I have for one of my favorite applications.
1. More options for viewing your Library
In iPhoto one can view their photos in many ways. You can view photos by albums, dates they are taken, and keywords. You can also setup smart albums to have dynamic albums based on criteria. I’d like some of this functionality to be in Library, particularly the ability to see your entire library without the need to select each shelf separately.
I’d love to have smart shelves based on Director, specific Actors, perhaps even date ranges they were released. I realize that searching for these specific details is possible, but having smart shelves would be nice as well.
2. Mark as read or watched
I doubt this feature would be very useful for music or games shelves, but I’d like to mark the dates I watch a movie. I’ve been using the notes feature for this, but I wouldn’t mind a quick button. This way I can mark that I’m about to watch a movie, and this would make it easier to select one for watching.
3. Full Library searches
Using the search field on the bottom of the application will only search the shelf you are on. I wouldn’t mind an option to make this a search based on my entire library, rather than the specific shelf I have selected. I can select all of the shelves, but that is getting annoying.
4. Suggestion shelf
If given “smart shelves” and the “mark as watched” features I’d probably be able to create this functionality myself, but I think that Delicious Monster could build something much better than I could dream up. Recently on their blog, they pointed to a way to eliminate movies until you find the movie you want to watch. This is a cool idea, but cumbersome and boring. I wouldn’t mind a shelf of suggestions based on my rating, amazon user’s rating, number of times watched and what I’ve recently watched. Combine that with a way to look at what is going on currently (actors birthdays, new movies by a given director being released, or someone dying) Library could suggest ten movies to watch. I realize that this feature is extremely involved and would be a “nirvana” like feature to have, so I won’t hold my breath for it.
5. Export into microformats
I’d love to see Library being able to export into some open data formats besides the tab-delimited text file that it does now. I realize that not many Library-users would use this feature, and that those that would use it should know that they can import a tab-delimited text file into Excel (or many other programs) and export it from there as just about anything, but I like my work done for me. Exporting to XML, CSV, or XLS would be kind of neat.
Also of note: Delicious Library creates a new calendar in iCal to track your items that you’ve lent out to friends and family. This can be published with WebDAV or exported to use in other ways besides viewing locally.
6. Library sharing
My Wife and I used separate iBooks. I keep Delicious Library on my iBook, but it’d be nice if she had the ability to check a book, cd, movie or game out to one of her friends, without her needing to have me do it. Beyond that, I think it’d be kinda cool to peer into friend’s libraries that are on the same network.
7. Library publishing
I’d love to publish my library as an HTML file on my Web site. This way my Internet friends can look at my library, and I could send them a DVD to view if they’d want. I think the main reason why Delicious Monster has not put this functionality in, is because they earn a kick back if you buy anything through Library on Amazon. If they were to try to do the same thing through the publish HTML file, people like me would go in and edit all the links to earn the dough. Perhaps this isn’t a reason, but that’s my guess.
Perhaps to get around this, they could provide a service through their Website. A Library user community of uploaded Library collections. I think though that this would get beyond their current business model for Library, otherwise they would have done this out the gate.
8. Random movie window
Mike and I were discussing this article, and he said he’d like to see a random movie button. Click it, and it will show you a random movie. Seems pretty simple and straight forward.
Overall, as I said before, Delicious Library is one of my favorite applications. Its by far not my most used applications, but its certainly one of the best that I have installed. I’m sure that version 2.0 will be a joy to have, and I’m anxiously awaiting its release.
Oh, one more wish list item, after 2.0 is released - Delicious Monster works on a new application. An affordable replacement to iPhoto, with tags, would be nice.

I’d like to see the price of an item actually be used, as in totals for the whole library and sub-totals for each category. Some kind of price report would be nice too. I’m thinking along the lines of media inventory rather than a “traditional” library.

Brian: Wish I thought of that, now all types of ideas are coming to mind. Good suggestions.

When I export I want the ability to choose what I export. So if i was going to tell somebody all the movies I have, i can just specify “Titles” instead of having to edit the file later.
As well as i purchase a lot of music on itunes. And yeah, i don’t have the barcode to scan, so i have to manually enter everything. I wish there was a way for it to read my itunes library and tell me what music i do have (whole albums) or something to that effect.

Jacob: Absolutely agree. I have the same problem with purchasing stuff from iTunes.

Oh, then again - people can’t “borrow” stuff from my iTunes library.
