The main reasons that I’m not getting an Xbox 360
Inspired by David Carnoy’s “Ten things I hate about the Xbox 360“, here are my main reasons for not buying an Xbox 360 on the first day of release.
It is a first-run product from Microsoft
Microsoft went back to the drawing board with the 360, so you could say its an entirely new product built off the experience they had with the original Xbox. Any first-run product is going to have problems. The iPod is a perfect example of this, being that many of their first tries at a new generation of iPod ends up having a few things wrong with it.
The Xbox 360 has had its fair share of problems, but nothing that you couldn’t see coming from a distance. Problems are bound to happen when your manufacturing systems in the millions. This is one reason I decided to wait a few months before purchasing an Xbox 360. Hopefully they will have updates to the hardware and software that comes with the 360 by the time I decide to purchase it (Spring 2006).
No killer games at launch
This was actually David’s #2 reason, and its mine as well. There is no one game that makes me crave the Xbox 360. I totally realize that there are great titles in the pipeline, and that the titles that they’ve released thus far are good - but they aren’t enough to make me want to spend the money on them.
My gaming habits differ from most people, I think. I get rather bored with games pretty easily. If I can’t beat a game in a relatively short period (1 week or so worth of playing), or if the game’s levels don’t vary from level to level, I will drop the game. That’s the main reason that my current collection of owned games is so low. I like multiplayer online games because each and every time you play it, you get a different experience. Once I beat a game, I don’t want it around anymore.
I’m too busy right now
Another reason it simply being busy. Quite often a new game will be released for Xbox, which Eliza knows I will enjoy, and she will ask “Do you want me to pick that up for you?”, often I will tell her no. I don’t like to have a game around unless I know that I can play it, and play it till the end. Perhaps when I wrap up a few projects I’m working on, I’ll spring for the 360 and pick up a few games to waste some time on. Until then I’ll subscribe to other’s experiences with it, and learn from their mistakes and successes.

I still can’t think of a recent games console that has been worth owning from day one. In every case I can think of (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, DS, PSP), there has been at best one good game to sustain the console through the first year of its life.
It seems to be a much better strategy to leave it a year, then you can pay less and get better games for your investment.

George: Although I agree, I still don’t understand why this is. You’d think that there would be a push to have “the best possible” releases on day one, just to ensure sales. I suppose that is why they build other features into these consoles like hard drive, wifi support, ipod compatibility, etc - those are the day one selling points, not the games.
Although I’m hearing good things about the new Call of Duty.

I may have to shell out $400 for one of these bad boys soon. Either that or spend $100 just so I can play regular X-Box live, which is something I don’t want to do when the system is going to be pre-historic once everyone gets their hands on a 360.
I might as well save the $100 and get the premium package along with wireless and the ability to play regular X-Box games as well.

All I know, is that you’re one of the hardest people to satisfy. This is just another one of those times.

A consumer that is tough to satisfy? Nooo!!! Not in America.
