Lousy April Fool’s Day
It’s official, this year’s April Fool’s day sucked. It’s not even over and i can say that. I was looking forward to something from Cupertino, but nothing, zero, nada. So what i’ll do is go through some of the best April Fool’s jokes ever. The jokes i saw today, completely sucked (all but one). Also, Baio did a good roundup of today’s jokes if you’re interested.
- In 1999, many websites reported that Bill Gates had been assassinated. Oh joy.
- In 2003, people panicked in Hong Kong after hearing that many had been infected with SARS and that all immigration ports would be closed to quarantine the region. The joke was started by a student who copied the design of a famous newspaper’s website and posted the news.
- In 2003, a radio station announced that Eminem would give a free concert, there was a traffic gridlock and a lot of enraged listeners who thereatened to harm the DJs responsible.
- In 2004, Google announced Gmail, everyone thought it was a hoax.
- In 2004, the Howard Stern Show was replaced by a station manager saying it had been cancelled due to pressure from the FCC. The radio station played pop songs instead. Stern came back on after an hour.
- In 2005, NASA said that they’d found water on mars and had pictures. People were disappointed when they saw a glass of water on a Mars Candy Bar.
Wikipedia has a list of previous jokes as well. I think it’s pretty clear that this year everything sucked, but there was one joke which fooled me completely. All in all, all but one of the jokes sucked. Sorry Google, Romance is just dumb and not funny anymore. Oh and Slashdot, pink is not the new black. And Last but not least, the 9rules acquisition joke sucked, good thing the 9r guys knew how to handle it and made it a bit funny.
- In 2006, Matt Mullenweg and Dean Allen announced a new weblog application to replace the two failed projects called WordPattern. Not a day after it launched, it was acquired by Flickr and changed it’s name to WordPattrn. Soon after that, Yahoo! acquired it and the name has been changed to WordPattrn! (thanks kory!).
There is however, one more announcement which i haven’t been able to prove wrong.
- In 2006, Theubergeeks.net weblog announced in a blog post that all of it’s writers gave away their macs and bought Dell laptops with Windows XP. They couldn’t be more excited.

I came home totally drunk at two in the morning, and completely fell for Thinkgeek’s Wireless Extension Cords. I was totally pissed that someone had invented it before me.

Joshua, i didn’t see it last night while drunk, else i would’ve fallen for it as well. Haha.
Andrew, yea, i read that Apple didn’t do anything for their 20th Mac anniversary in 2004, so i guess we shouldn’t've have expected anything this time.
