Movie Review: Curious George
I’ve been meaning to see this movie for quite a while now. I heard about it on a Jack Johnson fan site, because he did the soundtrack for the movie, which by the way, is simply fantastic, hopefully Chris might review it here at some point, but yes, it was brilliant and I had to see the film.
Curious George Movie Poster.
The movie came out on the U.S. on February 10, 2006, and it’s based on a series of children’s books written by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey so you might be familiar with the little monkey already. It also features Will Ferrel and Drew Barrymore (voices for Ted and the school teacher woman) among others. Again, the soundtrack is by Jack Johnson and it made it to No. 1 on the Billboard 100 charts, which ironically, is a first for Jack. There’s a rumor going on that a sequel to the movie is already in the works and might come out in late 2007.
Curious George and the hat.
So the movie is about Ted, a museum employee who is considered a son by his boss (making the boss’s real son angry). The museum isn’t doing so well, so the boss suggests Ted should go to Africa to find a huge statue and bring it back to showcase it. While Ted is in Africa, he keeps running into a cute monkey who likes to play. Ted seems to be quite unlucky, the statue he found is about 3 inches tall, and while leaving, the monkey follows him back to NYC. After being kicked out of the museum by the boss’s son, Ted spends time with George (the monkey), playing around in “Central Park”, a zoo and other places. George is a very “curious” monkey, he likes to play around with everything causing a big mess all the time. Ted grows tired of the little animal and has him captured and sent back to Africa, but his luck doesn’t change and the girl he likes tells him he should go after George since he was happy with him. Ted gets on the cruise ship in a very James Bond way, and reconciliates with George, it’s then when George finds out the 3 inch statue Ted had found was actually a map to the real statue, they go back to Africa, bring the statue home, re open the museum showcasing the 40 feet tall statue and with a slew of new attractions (Paint like George, Climb like George, etc., for the kids who visit the museum), and Ted finally hooks up with the woman teacher. The ending was yet another of George’s accidents (he launched a rocket to the moon or something) and Ted has to go after him.
Ted and Curious George.
I found the movie quite funny, entertaining and cool. It’s definitely a family movie, but I enjoy those from time to time as well. The animation wasn’t impressive, but it was well done, and again, the soundtrack is what made it for me.
I highly recommend this movie to pretty much anyone. If you’ve seen it, I’d love to read your impressions.

I’m still refusing to see it because Curious George is supposed to have a tail.. But after reading your review maybe I’ll check it out.

I took my 3 year old daughter to see this movie and she has never sat so still to watch a movie. She really enjoyed it and I did too. I actually saw it a second time without her!! I highly recommend it.

I’m making a cake of Curious George and have no idea if I should add a tail! I thought he had one but on all the recent pictures of him, I don’t see one. The kids are sure to point out my error if I get it wrong…should I add a tail? or not? HELP PLEASE!
