Screencast: Flock Beta 1
We have talked about Flock before, Colin tried it but ended up back with Safari. That was 4 months ago though, and as expected, Flock is now heaps better.

Just a few hours earlier, Flock entered it’s Public Beta phase, with it’s 0.7 build called “Cardinal” and a hot new design by our trebuchet-lover-buddy Bryan Veloso. The new build doesn’t have any “new features” but is basically a very stable release with well tested features, and they all rock. The Flock team is full of great people really, and the browser is now taking a good direction. It’s worth mentioning that apparently their target audience is the “myspace crowd” (quoting Bryan), if that makes any sense, which means they’re not worried about pointing the differences between it and Firefox, but rather target a browser-virgin audience. If they play their cards right, it might be a hit.
As I mentioned, Flock is stable now, however one issue which still has to be solved or dealt with is the memory usage. On my Mac, after launching and opening one website, it uses about 60mb of RAM, which isn’t something I’d notice, but for people without a lot of memory it might be a deal breaker. And as far as the speed goes, I can say it’s faster than Firefox for Mac but not as speedy as Camino, it doesn’t feel slow at all though. The interface/theme has been retouched as well, sporting new icons, it looks really nice on OS X. Overall, the new beta is worth checking out, it might not make you ditch your browser, but there is definitely a market for it out there.
Before you try it out though, I will show you some of the features it has, and how cool it is.

Excellent job going through each of the features. Flock has indeed come a long way aesthetically speaking.

Nothing beats Safari for me — but the Flock guys are really pulling together a solid browser. This is the kind of thing I’d set up for my little sister or a tech-illit girlfriend.

Don’t forget to check out the search box! It is does a full text search of your favorites/history and can even search the web without going to any other website (or seeing ads!)

Jesse, I did forget to show that in the video. It’s very neat, a lot like Inquisitor on Safari/Camino.

The browser for disintermediation on the web (and of web 2.0)
I wanted to separately point out this excellent and enthusiastic Screencast of Flock Beta 1, by Josue Salazar (of Made in Costa Rica, which I mention especially because I love Costa Rica, and Josue’s enthusiasm reminds me of Costa Rica).

Okay well I’m no browser virgin, but I like Flock. I love Firefox, so the similarites make me happy. And I love all the integration… maybe it’s that I’m lazy, but I like having it all at my fingertips. I like the ability to blog whatever I want no matter where I am. I like the feeds. I like it all. I will have to play around a lot more, but for now, Flock is happily my “default browser”.

Already this is better than Safari, Camino, and Firefox. New browser of choice for my MacBook Pro.

Nice. I’ll be using this to spread the word on Flock. I just started using it myself last week.

Tell me, is it only me? Or does the high compression of the video kill the playback on PowerBooks? Honestly, I like the idea of a nice screencast. But I can’t watch it. QuickTime, VLC do the sound part well. But having nearly no movement corresponding to the audio is kinda bad :(.
MPlayer Cracks completely. Audio and Visuals broken.
I could reencode it … but I think it’s a general issue. If spreading Flock is intended … please do not exclude us PPC lovers.
BTW: if my system is severely broken, please tell me
Must be OS X then though.
Specs: G4 1.67, 1.5G ram
kindest regards,
Moritz
