Macbook shuts down after 10.4.7 update
Others are experiencing this very same thing, and I’ve yet to figure it out completely, but my Macbook is randomly shutting down ever since the 10.4.7 update was released for the Mac OS.
I’ve tried the RAM, it doesn’t seem to be the cause. I’ve tried running the basic diagnostics, etc. I can’t seem to make it happen, so I’m pretty much up to the whims of the Macbook.
It has happened to me 3 times today, with zero warning, though I lost no data. I think I’m rather fortunate in that regard. It happened to me once yesterday, and twice a few days prior. This problem crept up since the update, though others are saying it happened to them just before the update.
Can any Macbook (or any other Apple system) owners confirm this? Any suggestions?
Also noted on Apple Support Discussions.
And on Digg.
If you are experiencing this issue. Call Apple Support so that they are made aware of this issue. They can not have a recall unless they know the number of people effected by this.
No problems here so far. I’ll report back if anything weird starts happening.

That sucks Colin. I have not had this issue thankfully. I have been running the 10.4.7 since it’s release and have had no issues. Though I’ll be sure to report back if this does start to happen.

Same happened to mine. I thought it was 10.4.7 as well but it turned out to be a logicboard problem. A LOT of the MacBooks are suffering from this. My suggestion is to do what I did which is take it in, be without it for a week and have them fix it. It will only get worse.

Someone I know had his MacBookPro hang after the 10.4.7 update and the only way to fix the problem was to reinstall 10.4.5 and patch following a few steps.
From what I understand, Apple has released a new patched version of 10.4.7, but the hanging problems are still occurring.

My new sexy thing - er, I mean, MacBook Pro 2.0 - is currently in for service for this exact issue - shutting down randomly. Mine was the first one sold out of the Pioneer Place Apple Store (Portland, OR) and mine is from the second or third week of production (based on the serial number).
It’s been happening to me for three weeks, it only happened when running on the battery, and it happened several times prior to updating to 10.4.7.
Since it was an intermittent problem, I was lucky in that it happened to the Mac Genius within a minute or two, literally, of him taking a look. He thought it was the logic board since the battery still showed a full charge but I’m personally hoping they replace the battery, too. I’ve heard reports of “bulging” batteries and this strange “silent recall” on early-model batteries.

Matt,
I got my black MacBook when they were still quite new, before 10.4.7. Within a few days it started randomly refusing to wake from sleep. I brought it to my local Apple shop and they replaced the logic board.
On the macosx-talk mailing list someone recently reported problems with his MacBook. From the sound of them, my first thought was “bad logic board.”
I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions based on my own experience, but from what I’ve seen here and elsewhere there seem to be real problems with at least some of the MacBooks. Hopefully the affected users can get their machines fixed without too much hassle, and future batches from Apple will be better.

I don’t think it’s related to the 10.4.7 update. My MacBook is running 10.4.6 and is doing the exact same thing, i.e. shuts down randomly. Sometimes one or two weeks go by without it happening, sometimes many shut downs in the same day. You can “make” it happen by running the extended hardware test from the system disk.

Actually, the Mac forum you linked to had a related link to a much lengthier Apple Discussion Forum thread.
The consensus there seems to be:
(1) It is NOT related to 10.4.7, although it is odd that things started happening after the update. Many posts claiming that reverting to an earlier update did nothing to fix the problem.
(2) It MAY be RAM related. Not likely, but possibly.
(3) The most likely culprit seems to be a bad logic board. Almost everyone speaks of their faulty MB being weeks 20-22. Many seem to have their’s in for repair and hope to get them back early in the upcoming week. A few actually got replacements already… weeks 24-26… and report that so far, so good.
I highly recommend you wade through this thread. Hope that helps!

I have a MacBook Pro that had the spontaneous no-warning shutdown problem. The shutdowns only occrrued when running on battery power and there was NO warning. Just a black screen and silence. Turned out to be a battery problem - once it was replaced by AppleCare I haven’t had another instance of the problem. I don’t know if this applies to the MacBook, but thought it may help. At least it’s easy to try with another battery. Good luck.

What environment is the computer used in? Perhaps its too hot there. Macs are specced to operate in 90 degree or less environments and a sudden shutdown can be indicitive of a system thats overheating.
It could be a defensive maneauver on the computers part to prevent it from harm.

It has been happening to me with a Black MacBook. I called Apple tech support, they didn’t have any idea what was going on. I actually managed to get mine to do the insta-shutdown thing while I was on the line with the guy. So he had me bring it to my local Apple shop. I had my machine there for a week and they claimed that they couldn’t duplicate the problem and that all diagnostic tools reported the machine to be fine. So I got it back unchanged… It shut down on me several times within the next day or so of getting it back. I think it was happening to me prior to the 10.4.7 update. However, I’m now sure it’s software caused. I noticed this weekend that “EVERY single time I tried to uncompress a particular .sit file with the Universal Beta of Stuffit Expander” my machine would instantly shutdown, as per the reported problem. I have sneaking suspicions that the problem might be being caused by incompatible PPC system additions, such as APE, or other weird things that run at boot time and in the background. Because I used a firewire cable to transfer my settings from a powerbook to the MacBook, it transfered all sorts of things that typically wouldn’t be installed. I’ve systematically worked my way through the library folders removing these older PPC only “extensions” and/or updating them to Universal versions. And so far, for the past day and a half I’ve been remarkably stable.
Here’s hoping.

I have a MBP and I have experienced a similar problem, however mine was due to hardware and not software. What happened was I bought more RAM from a 3rd party supplier (Corsair was the brand), but it seems that the particular version I bought ran slightly out of spec and cause my laptop to reset.
For those that have upgraded their RAM, I would suggest doing the Apple Hardware Test and also running their unit with only the factory installed RAM.
It seems like the logic boards in these models may be very sensitive to the attributes of the RAM installed.

I just experienced another shutdown which led me to this blog after searching for an answer on the internet.
My MBP also seems to shutdown at certain time after I’ve disconnected it from the power adapter.
Sometimes I can’t even switch it on right after the crash unless I put it back to the power adapter.
This is really weird since you have no guarantee when working without it being plugged-in. I’ll probably have to make use of my Apple Care Package.

This problem started the day the update came down for me.
I took it to the Apple store in La Jolla, CA and they said they could not do anything as it wasn’t happening. It is very intermitent, happens when it wants to. I took it to another store in Santa Clara, CA and it shut down while the tech at the Genius Bar was creating a repair ticket.
Since I live in San Diego I took it back on Wednesday, last night and today they did an archive and restore, calling me and telling me the Mac Book (a CTO edition no less) was fixed and working fine.
I booted it up at dinner, at my favorite restaurant which has WiFi, and poof…just after booting with nothing running, it went off.
I called the store back..they are a bit concerned. Tomorrow one of their lead geniuses will call me….I explained it’s either a software issue or hardware…I think it’s an update issue.
Andy Abramson on July 13th, 2006 11:42 pm
Oh. Mine shuts down in either battery or power corded states.
The best is when you try to start it up immediately after the shutdown occurs. It goes into a cycle of start and shut down.

Seems like some have good result (Scott Piggott) with their repair and some don’t. Is there any knowledge base reference we can get to refer to our problem when we ask for service? I just don’t want my MacBook out of commission AND not getting this fixed.
Would Scott mind sharing his repair case number so we can at least let the tech knows what we’re talking about?

same problem here- took it to the apple store and after switching the memory chips around, it ran nicely for a good hour at the store. crashed on me 8 times that night. good to see that other people have the same problem, i will take it back to the store as soon as possible.

It seems my shut downs where causeed by a bad battery…It would shut down when the battery would get below 45%. I had some bulging on the battery casing due to the heating of the battery. I took my MBP to the apple store and they replaced my battery on the spot.

I had the same problem with my week 19 MacBook. Took it to the Apple Store Saturday and they didn’t even question it, just immediately said they’re shipping it to CA for logic board replacement and it would take a week. Mine started shutting down the day I upgraded to 10.4.7 and got progressively worse. So if yours is just doing it every now and then right now, might as well start backing up and pick the best week you can think of to be without your computer. Sure hope it works when it comes back!

Just a thought. I have the black macbook (purchased in mid to late June). The system has never randomly shut down but I do have a friend whose macbook is shutting down at any given time, whether plugged in or not. I hear that with 10.4.7, there is an embeded firmware update for the logic board (which is why the system is slow to boot up after the inital installation of 10.4.7) which may be causing the problem. Since there is no way to go backwards with firmware, most people are having the logic board replaced (and it seems the board has the old firmware), but luckily if you have 10.4.7 already installed, the firmware will not get upgraded in the new logic board as long as you don’t try to re-install 10.4.7 again!

Hello everyone, I tried to change the following and has helped the shut down to reduce to like 1 or 2 times max now…
Go to System Preferences> Energy Saver > under settings for Power Adapter >Optimization sleet the option ‘Better Energy Savings’
it does help, also see on the vent on the backs side of ur MacBook as it seems some of the Mac Books were shipped with thin plastic on it, is so remove that ASAP
Further do not use ur Macbook on soft surfaces like Pillow, cushion, bed instead try hard surfaces like table, hard board as that allows the heat to pass away smoothly, all of this 3 should work and help u for sure, please try now, I am using MacBook 2.0 with 2 GB DDR2 SD RAM…
All the best and Mr. Jobs r u listening we need help now!

It’s happening to me. This is my first Apple computer since my //gs, which replaced a trusty ][+. I can’t say I’m excited about taking this computer to law school in the fall, as a crash at the wrong time will cost me dearly for note-taking or (G-d forbid) exams.
MBP with 2GB factory installed RAM, 10.4.7, and nothing incriminating in the system logs. Week 16, if I understand the serial #.
Problems started after the 10.4.7 upgrade. Machine randomly powers off as if I’d held down the power button. Plink. Off. I reboot, and the computer sometimes does the same after a few minutes of stability at the desktop. Plink. Off. Nice!
I thought it might be the heat, but it’s not at its hotest when these things happen. I can’t find a common thread as to why this happens. I would think it had to be hardware, given the lack of any warning (or mention in logs.)
One thought I had is that I’m running Parallels, as I would imagine most Mac powerusers are. Parallels, even when not running, has a kernel extension that loads at boot-time. Perhaps if it is not purely hardware, it involves Parallels? (Which presumably is hooked into OSX pretty deeply to play nice with the Intel VT-X virtualization stuff.) Just a random thought.
What disgusts me about Apple, and I know they are not alone in this regard, is the terrible lack of information they provide as to known issues. I know it is to protect their bottom line, but there’s only so much I can take feeling like a beta tester.
I’ll be calling Apple tomorrow, but given the inconsistent level of help people have been getting, I’m prepared to be royally pissed off at the thought of a lengthy time without a computer I depend on for work (and soon school.)

Same happened to me. First it shut down once, then stayed up for an hour after I restarted. Then it shut down after 5 mins, then 1 minute, 30 seconds, then wouldn’t restart at all without shutting down immediately.
Took it to the Genius bar and they ran a couple programs simultaneously which invoked the problem again. They told me that they would repair it since it was under warranty but would not be liable for any lost data. Great! I just bought the MB hardly a month ago and it’s all configured to my needs. So, what to do? They said if I bought the Procare package for $100 they would make an image of my hard drive (I upgraded to 120gb and already have 55-60gbs full) as a back up; repair would take at least a week.
So, now I’m out another $100 (which I think they should have thrown in since with the computer shutting down there was no way for me to back it up myself) and out a computer for 10 days or so, with worry that when I get it back, maybe it’ll be the same, maybe it won’t (the Genius bar also gave me the disclaimer that if their backup is corrupted, tough sh*t).
I agree with an earlier comment — Mac sells their computers on the idea of better performance, reliability and ease of use. They are overselling the fact — computers are all flawed, Mac and PC alike. I like the Mac experience better, but I don’t think I should have to pay $100 for them to backup my faulty computer. Bad *customer* experience.

Man… I’m a mac user for past 2 decades and mac laptop user since 1990s. Bought this thing past June and I have to say, its been nothing but disappointment.
First the damn design. It has hard edges at the bottom and leaves lines on my wrist. Sometimes, it hurts my wrists.
Second, the “yellowing”. I would thought someone did some beta testing and also checked on material testing.
Third, This BS, Random shut down. I searched on “google” to find this thread! I can’t believe a computer will do this. I’m Calling Apple (again) and going to complain about this.
Also, is this more of MacBook issue or both MacBook and MacBook Pro?? Because I’m going to get rid of this MacBook and get MacBook Pro if this is isolated issue.

When we got it back it of course was still doing it. We took it to the genius bar, their suggestion- send it in again. We told them that was not an option and ended up with a new macbook.

To answer Sheri above see here: https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/
My MacBook Pro has also been experiencing the unexpected shutdowns. Sometimes reaching several times a day before I finally left it in two different AppleStores for repair. First they did some tests, updated the PMU, etc., and took out my extra RAM. Fine on testing. I had them put the RAM back in (since I wanted to use my full RAM) and took it home. Problem persisted.
I took it back to another, where they replaced the logic board, ran tests, no problems. Computer ran great for at least a week or two, but recently has been having “rare” recurrence of the unexpected shutdowns. I’m also in the pool for battery replacement, so hoping that will take care of it for good. Problem is I’m in Argentina for the next 6 weeks so I’m not sure how I’m going to get the battery replacement accomplished.
My black MacBook (which I bought about a month ago) has no such problems. Love it so far!

This is not exactly the same topic… but it is about my MacBook Pro, which has been experiencing the problems everyone else talks about in this topic.
Well… tonight I had an automatic notice for two software updates. One was a security update that was marked “Intel” among other things, and the other I don’t remember exactly what it was. The security update (and maybe the other) required a reboot after installation. Upon rebooting, I cannot open my browser (Safari) or Mail, they both open and immediately shutdown. This is definitely something that started happening after the software updates. I was using both applications extensively right beforehand.
I am so mad at my MacBook Pro I could toss the thing out the window right now. I’ve owned a lot of computers, Macs and other ones, and never had so much trouble in so little time as I have with this. It’s really quite distressing.
I’m busy with a bunch of other things - and for now my black MacBook is still working fine (that’s what I’m writing this on) and I’ll mention that I have NOT and will NOT do the security update that also shows due on the list for this machine until it’s shown to me that the particular update will not hose my ability to communicate over the Internet. (Maybe they’re suggesting that for security reasons you shouldn’t use the Internet any more??
) I’ll call AppleCare, again, once I get some extra time. Or maybe I’ll just take it to the Apple Center MacStation and tell them to check it in for major evaluation. I’ve gonefrom being patient, to being somewhat less patient, to being downright annoyed.

I have the dreaded ‘random shut off’ problem on my MacBook (1 Ghz White).
Here is what I can figure out:
-happens with no warning. complete shut off.
-rebooting sometimes will not work right after shut off (continues to immediately shut off).
-happens when cold or hot.
-my battery empty warning seems to not work (the 5 mins of battery left…save all work message)
-i can sometimes recreate the shut off by running Mail, browser, and then playing the Backgammon or Reversi game (or some graphics game).
-have reset PMU without any change.
-will happen if plugged in or on battery.
I called AppleCare a couple weeks ago and they refered me to the local repair facility. They reset the PMU again and couldn’t recreate the problem. Guess what? It’s back. I’m calling AppleCare again tonight.

my MB got the shut-down problems no matter i am plugged in or on battery. In fact this morning I was experienced 3 times shut down without warning. First time was i just wake my MB up, and I just went away, when I am back, i found that it’s shut-down already.. then I tried to turn it on again, then i was searchin in google about this problem, and iw as linked to a you tube page, when i was watching the video, I think in the middle part of that video, my MB shut down again.
Then I was not quite sure that was the problem (i mean youtube), so I start the MB again, and I was trying to finish the video, however it shut down again in the middle part of the video. So I think that video might cause my MB shut down..but i have no problem when watching other videos in youtube. so I don’t know why.
I have tried a few times auto shut down before, but I thought it’s because of the problem of RAM, altho’ i got 2GB RAM.. anyway.
In fact , I can’t figure out what’s the problem, as MB is my first Mac computer, so .. I thought it was software problem before visiting here.. but now I am really not quite sure.

Finally, I have some answers. (hopefully)
I just talked to Apple support (after an hour of waiting) and got to talk to a young lady named June. She had heard of this problem before and actually had ideas on how to fix them, though she did not know exactly what was causing the problem to being with. So with that being said, everyone should try doing these steps:
1. Reset the “P-RAM”.
- Turn off your Mac and follow these steps. Locate the Apple, Option, P, and R keys. Get them ready to hold down. Once you’re in position, turn the Mac on and immediately press and hold those keys, at the same time, until the Mac restarts again, then let go of the keys. Once the Mac starts up and you’re at your desktop, restart the Mac one more time.
2. Reset the “PMU” (Power Manager Unit).
- First thing is to take out everything that is plugged into your Mac, so it’s completely standing alone. Turn the Mac off and proceed to take the batter out. Once you have done this, press and hold the power key for 5 seconds then let go. Put your battery back in and turn your Mac back on, with or without the AC power (it’s up to you).
3. If you’ve tried both of these options and your Mac still continues to shut off, try taking the RAM out and simply putting it back in. June told me the RAM could be seated a little off in it’s place, thus causing random shut downs. If you’re unsure of how to go about doing this, let me reassure you it’s VERY easy. Bless Apple for this. Instead of typing out instructions, let me refer you to his page: www.Apple.com/support Article# 303721 - “How to Insall Memory”.
6. If you’ve done all three of these steps and STILL have shut-offs occuring, then it’s time to do some well planned research tests to rule out certain possiblities and call Applecare with your results. These include the following:
- Attemp to use the Mac with just the AC power supply. Take the battery out and see if your Mac still crashes.
- When you witness your Mac shutting off, write down what you were doing when the shut off occured. (ie: software, how long your Mac has been running, battery in or out, ect)
- If you have third party devices plugged in anywhere. Such as RAM from some company, any mouse that’s not Apple, even speakers may play a part.
All in all, try these steps before you call Applecare. It will save you massive amounts of time, trust me, I know. If you still expreince shut offs after all these steps, I suggest calling Applecare or emailing me at garrettjrussell@gmail.com to compare notes on what “rule outs” you’ve aquired, so the next time I call Applecare, waiting on the phone for an hour won’t be in vain.
Thanks, and I hope these help.

Black MacBook shuts down with no notice - with or without battery. Genius Bar says “gee we really haven’t heard much about this at all” - I showed them numerous chat board comments and they responded - dont get hung up on these chat board comments - these represent very few complaints from hundreds of thousands of happy customers. Almost like they know about it but dont want to discuss it. One minor solution seems to be working - when I go to reboot - I hold down the power button for about 10 seconds - then let go - the white lite stays solid - the machine sounds a warning buzz - then the system comes back up and stays on till I power down. Next power - we start all over again with shutdowns ususally within the first 3 minutes. On and on it goes.

I have the same exact problem, even though I already had the logic board replaced by Apple! This problem first started in mid-July, and I took it to an Apple store and was without it for 11 (yes, 11, ridiculous) days. Apparently the reason why it took so long is because the first new logic board they put in was actually found to be defective as well, so they had to install another one! Now this one is randomly shutting down as well. This sucks!

I have a 20 day old MacBook. It is shutting down just like everyone elses. I went to the Apple store and with almost no hassle they have ordered a new logic board (motherboard) for me. I definetly reccomend this to everyone. Basically they will keep your hard drive and change the logic board. I can only hope that it is some sort of second generation board. If you have a macbook that is less then 14 days old and you have no customization then you may be able to get an exchange. GO TO THE STORE! ASK FOR THE REPAIR! PRAY THAT IT WORKS! This is a $1000 repair. Make Apple do the write thing.

My random shut downs (5-week-old macbook) started two days ago and now the thing won’t stay on for more than a few seconds. I’ve been waiting to get a spot at the genius bar, but am thoroughly frustrated. Last week the automatic firmware update crashed the machine and after several support calls I had to reinstall the OS from the recovery disks.
I’m a grad student and this was my first mac purchase. I made the switch specifically because of the claims that macs are less likely to shut down. I feel like a big idiot for believing the ads and wish I return what required a large percentage of my student income.

UPDATE: I just called AppleCare and they told me this is a big problem that they have been hearing a lot about. I complained as to why Apple hasn’t released an offical notice to people and AppleCare, of course, didn’t know why.
They told me the only thing they can think of to cause the problem is that they rushed all of the current MacBooks out of the plant to get them into consumers hands before they were ready. Thus causing default components.
I’m shipping it off to get a new Logic Board (mother board) and hopefully this one will work ok…

Can this only be a problem with Mac Books? I have a iMac G5 not intel. in our office which this week started showing the same symptoms that everyone here is talking about. What is the deal? Can I do anything about it ? or Bite the bullet and have our office be out of a computer for a week or more. Thinking is that we need new logic boards?

I finally heard back from my Apple tech guy (after 8 days). He said that I’ll have to send it in or that I could just drop it off at an Apple Store with my case #.
I walked over to the Apple store where I was told that I had to get an appointment with a ‘genius’. She checked their log and said I’d have to wait an hour and a half. I explained that I was just dropping it off and didn’t need to actually see a ‘genius’. She explained that it didn’t matter, this was the way they did it. I said that I wouldn’t wait and I would write a letter of complaint as I’ve been working patiently on this problem for over two weeks. She finally asked a ‘genius’ to bump me up in line which he did and I filled out a form and handed over the macbook.
Needless to say, I am not pleased with Apple’s service.

As a footnote: when I mentioned the problem, the genius seemed to be familiar with it although he didn’t come out and say it outright. He certainly didn’t act like this was a unique case.

I have had this problem but when i start up without the battery in it as for the past 30 minutes it seems fine. Anyone else try that? Not that this will help much but just curious.

Same thing is happening to my black Macbook. I can use it for a few minutes or maybe a whole day and then nothing, every time after that, the fans start revving up and it shuts down. I spoke to the guy in the apple store and he couldn’t replicate it (though he only switched it on once) this is the second mac this year to go wrong after my powerbook, bought in january, had an unspecified problem. My old g4/400 powermac bought for £20 has been working with no problems.
Grrrrr!

My Mac Book Pro first had a fried magnetic power cord, then the bulging, fried battery and no warning shut down phenomenon. Tekserve and Apple replaced both as soon as I told them, but now with the new battery it is again powering off without warning. I am ready to throw this piece of junk in the Hudson River!

I got my Macbook back today. They said I’d get it back in five days and they did. They replaced the logic board. Fingers crossed the problem is solved…

After the SMC Firmware update, the very next day…shutdown.
The Black MacBook CTO edition is back with Apple.

White MB, bought it on day 1 (with a 3 year services plan) - I started the day totally hosed. fortunately I had finished a complete backup over nite. remove the battery, and power, pressed the button for 10 seconds (5 extra for good measure), Reassembled the MB, pressed and held down the power button until the honk/beep sounded - I’ve been working ever since.
Strange thing - until this morning, Bootcamp would not run successful - and detected another partition on the hard drive. after this morning - it worked fine. I changed nothing. Still running -
And now my mysterious issue with Bootcamp (phantom partition on the hard drive) seems to have solved - and I have a (holding my nose) XP running on the machine.
No shutdowns in XP either (but I did have a BSD when I tried to access the camera).

you’ve been having problems with your MacBook shutting down by itself, take a look at this DIY solution. An engineer from Germany took his own MacBook apart and seems to have found the problem.
The cause? The heat sensor cable that sits next to the CPU’s heat sink. As the heat sink expands during use, the cable comes into contact with the sink and gets its insulation melted, thus shorting the cable and causing the MacBook to turn off. After a while, the heat sink cools, shrinks, and breaks the short, which means your MacBook is fine to turn back on.
A solution is to bust open your case and place some insulation tape around the affected areas of the sensor cable. Once you do that—unless the tape melts also—there should be no problems with sudden shutdowns. Though this procedure may or may not void your warranty. You may want to just wait until Apple acknowledges and fixes this for you.

Have two new MacBooks, one purchased on June 2nd and another on June 24(for my daughter) both are shutting down. I have open claims on both and was told by Apple Care not to go to the stores, that if the repairs they suggest don’t work they will send a pick-up for the computers. I have taken the battery out of my MacBook and so far, no shut down for two days. I am waiting for Apple Care to open so I can, hopefully, have them ship me a new battery without having to send my unit in. If this works I will do the same for my daughter’s MacBook. How do we start a news blitz on this problem that Apple isn’t taking care of this huge problem on their own? They shouldn’t be selling these until they fix all of our computers. Anyone know how to get an article into the New York Times?

Just got off the phone with AppleCare, waited 15 minutes for a rep and then spent 35 more speaking with him. They are sending out a new battery for each computer and get this, I had to give them a credit card so if I don’t return the defective one I’ll get charged.(Like I want to hold on to the old one, although I guess they need to get their money back from the battery companies) Hopefully this will work or I’ll be sending them in for new boards. Of course the AppleCare rep acted like he never heard of the problem. How can Apple continue to ignore this problem? Keeping my fingers crossed. The battery being an issue would make sense since the computer gets so hot.

Well, I just started noticing the shut down problem too. I’ve had my MacBook since July 1st and it’s just begun to give me problems within the past two weeks.
I’m gonna try the DIY solutions and hope for the best. I’ve got a BootCamp partition and thought it might be related to that. I have a couple of firewire drives and was thinking that was the problem, but it happened with out those drives plugged in.
Problem is that I’m back in Japan now, where I live temporarily, so I hope I don’t get any heat from Apple for servicing. I believe thave I have to do this from America since I bought it there.
Logic boards, PRAM, RAM, updates, batteries, heat sensors… I think the only thing people haven’t mentioned is the screen and rotation of the Earth.
