Movie Review: The Benchwarmers

I’m a big fan of David Spade, I’ve seen almost every TV show he’s been in (Baywatch, Just Shoot Me!, 8 Simple Rules), obviously I knew the movie simply couldn’t disappoint me.

There’s also Rob Schneider, who’s just the cherry on the cake. And Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), and Jon Lovitz (from NewsRadio & SNL). Oh and guess who the producer is, none other than Adam Sandler!. You should be renting this movie by now. Seriously. No? Well, it was released on April this year, and I believe the DVD is already out. If you’re a Star Wars fan you should know there are a lot of references, I mean R2D2 is in it for crying out loud!. One guy even drives the original Batmobile car and the Knight Rider.

The story goes like this. Two guys are complete dorks, and this other one is cool and talks to them, so they become friends. One day they see a boy getting bullied by this other kid on a baseball field and they decide to help him and end up playing baseball to settle the score. The kid’s dad, who’s a millionaire, wants them to be a baseball team so that kids who get picked on can look up to something and have fun. Throughout the movie, they play against other teams in a little league, but everything turns bad when they discover one guy in the team was actually a bully back in school. They end up forgiving him and instead of them playing the final game, they let all the kids have the fun (since they never get to play on a final, or on any games actually). There are a bunch of other story lines, like the geeks trying to actually kiss a woman for the first time (yeah they’re like 25-30), or the grown up man who’s never been out of his house, or the latino drunk who plays in one of the games. Hilarious.

The Benchwarmers actors

Jon Heder, David Spade, Jon Lovitz and Rob Schneider.

I really enjoyed the movie. Sure, it’s not going to win any awards, but it’s a great family flick, or just a great comedy film. If you want to enjoy an afternoon, and laugh for one hour straight, don’t miss The Benchwarmers.

Josue, I was very pleasantly surprised with this movie as well. The ending dragged on a little too long, but overall I had a bunch of gut laughs. The ratio to genuine laughs to “wow, that was really lame” moments was pretty good, so I definitely would recommend it to anyone, regardless if this is there bag or not.
