Rise Against - Injection

Why This Song?: It’s been a good long while since I have hit anybody off with some type of harder edged song, so now is as good a time as any. The summer season is a great one for rolling around with your windows down and some crankage of killer tuneage.

“Injection” is off of the highly anticipated new album from Rise Against, “The Sufferer and the Witness”, who have made quite a name for themselves the last couple of years. The album “Siren Song of the Counter Culture” gave them some MTV attention, which to many is deemed a negative, but in my opinion this band deserves it.

“Injection” is a fast-paced song that really showcases what the Chicago quartet do best. The lyrics catchy and pretty typical to the genre, but the music is what really steals the show along with the back and forth type exchanges that really make the song standout from the rest of the album, which is full of incredible tracks including “Ready to Fall,” “Worth Dying For,” “Bricks,” and extremely catchy “The Good Left Undone.”

Tim McIlrath’s vocals are nothing to write home about, but they get the job done for what they are trying to accomplish. Like I said, this isn’t a band that is trying to do anything magical with their vocals. They want to make records that make kids dance around in the pits and raise a couple fists, and with that in mind, they do an excellent job.

“Injection” to me ranks against “Black Masks and Gasoline” as one my favorite Rise Against songs. I’m sure any previous Rise Against fans have already heard the album, but those who haven’t can rest assured this is a very good piece of work. For anyone else who are open to pretty accessible “hardcore-punk” type music this may be one to add to your collection.

Jake, you’re just far too jaded to be open minded so I’ll take your comment with a grain of salt.

I must say, I’m rather pleased with this album as a whole. I was more than a little disappointed by their last album (can’t even think of the name off the top of my head), but I still listen to the Unravelling and Revolutions per Minute on a regular basis. The Sufferer and the Witness definitely brings out similarities to those albums that left a smile on my face the first time I heard it.

However, I could do without the acoustic/slow songs. ;)

They rule! If you ever get a chance to check them out live, I recommend that you do, they are really good live.

I have to completely agree with you Matt. I’ve listened to RPM more times than I could count, and Unraveling about half as much. But Siren Song was just utter crap to me. Overproduced and rushed.

I’m so glad I have my Rise Against back. I keep trying to listen to other things, but at the end of the day I keep coming back to it.

Siren Song was utter crap? You must not write music for a living. Siren Song’s only letdown was Tim’s vocals were a bit “too much”, but the overall construction of the songs, the structuring and layering were brilliant. I thought the hooks and cohesion of the lyrics and music were outstanding. Like I said, my only letdown was Tim’s singing just seemed too labored and forced and I didn’t like Swing Life Away all that much, but it was still a successful album.

The Sufferer and the Witness is probably my favorite album by these guys, but Siren Song is far from crap. And I actually like the acoustic song on this album better.
