Farewell to Pluto

Poor Pluto. I’m the youngest child in my family. So, for awhile I was the smallest too. I’d hate to be kicked out of my family. Pluto, has just been kicked out of the Solar System as a planet and has now been classified as a dwarf planet.

“A dwarf planet, according to the new definition, is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.”

Good thing they tossed specification (d) in there. I wouldn’t want to mistake Sputnik for a dwarf planet.

Pluto, you’ll always be the 9th planet to me!
