Notes on Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0
Microsoft released version 6 of it’s Messenger client for Mac yesterday, and it’s a very welcome update. Here are my notes after using it for a few hours:
- It’s very easy to change your status, and set your status message.
- You can only log in to one MSN account at a time, unless your company has a Corporate account on Windows Live.
- I can’t figure out how to talk to people on the Yahoo network yet.
- The toolbar is nice, and it acts as any other toolbar on OS X, you can customize it.
- You can save your contact list to a file, you can also import a contact list.
- By default, it has a sound alert for new messages, it’s the classic sound you were used to in the Windows version.
- It saves conversations by default.
- If you hover on a contact that’s unavailable and double click on the name, it will act as a mailto: link to the contact’s email.
- The default font for text messages is Lucida Grande at 12px. Very nice.
- You can activate a drawer on a message window that will show both your avatar and your contact’s avatar.
- It displays avatars/display pictures by default in the message window, just like iChat.
- The Send button is huge.
It’s a great update, it won’t make anyone stop using Adium, but it’s good to know we have a good alternative for MSN. I would use it full time if it had tabs and if I could sign into more than one MSN account at a time. It’s a Universal Binary now too.
Now here are some pictures of it:

why is there still no webcam support?
Is msft keeping that service out on purpose?
If I could use my webcam with my PC using friends on MSN I would drop adium (at least when using MSN) in and instant.

MSN for Mac is sub-par. aMSN is better, you can actually do a video chat from a Mac to a windows MSN user.
