Jones Soda switching to pure cane sugar

According to the article stating that Jones Soda is switching to pure cane sugar:

Jones Soda Co., looking for a marketing advantage, is making the switch to pure cane sugar from high fructose corn syrup as a soda sweetener.

“It’s better for you, it’s better-tasting and, overall, it’s better for the environment,” Peter van Stolk, the company’s chief executive officer, said Tuesday.

Seattle-based Jones, which makes root beer, cream soda and quirky drinks with flavors such as turkey and gravy, will sell 12-ounce canned sodas with pure cane sugar after Jan. 1. All of the company’s products will make the switch by mid-2007, van Stolk said.

It’s unfortunate that this is only a marketing tool for a company such as Jones Soda. The move to healthier, natural ingredients is one that I wish all food producers would make.

A company like Jones always seemed to be a different kind of company, one that looked out for it’s consumers and did things differently than the big boys. It saddens me to a point to see that they are following the lead of smaller beverage producers on this front.

Even though there was a recent write up somewhere about the questionable level of natural and organic foods labeled as such at Walmart stores at least it’s a start. Each time I visit the grocery store or Walmart’s food section and take a look at what I’m being offered, nine times out of 10 I’ll choose the one labeled as organic and I’d encourage you to do so as well.

No matter what the impetus, I’m glad they are making the switch. I hear that Coke with actual sugar is very good - and it is available to our Southern global neighbors but not us.

I too, look for organic stuff. But not nearly enough. I’ll pick up juice and stuff that is organic, and then I’ll grab a bag of chips! Ugh.

I’m very glad for the switch as well, in case I didn’t clearly explain so. I didn’t know about Coke going with actual sugar though, wonder when Pepsi will join the club since that’s what I drink.

Mike: I didn’t mean to make it seem like Coke is switching just that in countries like Mexico (supposedly from what I’ve read and heard) you can get Coke that has real sugar.

    Anyone confirm this?

I misread your comment then. According to the article it sounds like beverage producers in places like Mexico do use pure cane sugar.

Colin: I can tell you that our Coke comes from Mexico and it has real sugar.

There is nothing about sugar that makes it “healthier” than high fructose corn syrup. Nutrition-wise, they are nearly identical. I like Jones soda, although I’ve never been able to tell the difference between soda made with sugar from that made with HFCS. It’s a kind of sweetener either way, so enjoy with moderation.

This is good to see, not exactly the best impetus to make the change, but none the less good. I’m not a fan of their “sugar free” sodas since they have splenda in them.

We try to buy organic when possible and locally grown when that’s available. It’s hard though, as convenience wise the mass produced filled with who knows what is so readily available.

We were in the grocery store last night choosing between fat free redi-whip and the real stuff. Looking at the ingredients I could recognize and pronounce 90% of the ones on the regular “full fat” version, and almost none on the no fat. I’d rather have a little of the real deal then load myself up stuff that’s chemically produced.

My graphic design internship was with a company who did the brochures for Vanillin, I saw way too much of synthetic product background and information.

I need to start looking at the ingredients a little closer. Everyone needs some fat in their diet no matter what so I’ll usually shy away from the no fat variety.
