iTunes is storing my Podcasts locally

I’m looking for a way to force iTunes to save my podcast and vidcast subscriptions to the same directory that I chose my music Library to be stored in.

Recently I decided, since getting a green iPod Nano, that I no longer need my entire music library to be on my laptop’s hard drive. This freed up over 20Gb of space on my laptop - and so I thought that since I asked iTunes to store its files on my external hard drive, that the podcast and vidcast files would follow suit.

This does not seem to be the case. Upon inspection my files are still being stored in the “Podcasts” directory inside of the iTunes Music directory on my local drive.

Video casts are not small either, especially since I only get the chance to catch up on all of my subscriptions once per week. This means that while I am saving space by having my music library stored elsewhere, I’m still losing space because of all of these files being stored locally.

There is no preference in iTunes, that I have found, that allows me to store Podcasts on my external hard drive. Does anyone know of a hack or a way to allow this?

Buddy, Advanced > Consolidate Library. Then open ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ and trash your podcasts, they’ll be in your external drive now.

This is just a way to copy the stuff to your external hd though, not a permanent solution. I doubt there’s a permanent one, I mean, what if you open itunes with your external unplugged? If you import a CD or download podcasts, they will go into the iTunes Music folder, but again, you can just consolidate when your external is plugged in and then trash the stuff from where itunes put it.

Whoa whoa whoa. Even though I tell iTunes I want my Library to be permanently stored on my external hard drive iTunes will put anything new on my local drive??

You have got to be kidding ( I need to find a CD to import ).

I forgot, if you buy something from the iTunes Store, it will also store it locally.

Again, this happens if your external library is unplugged.

Another thing is, if you plug in your iPod and launch iTunes without your external attached, it will completely freak out and you won’t be able to put music or podcasts in it, even if you have some local music files.

Josue: I’ve been able to confirm that iTunes will only store my Podcasts locally when my drive is not connected before I start up iTunes. Which is perfectly understandable.

Well that’s what I said. You can consolidate your library when you do connect your external drive and then you can delete the stuff from the hard drive in your macbook.
