NewsGator: NetNewsWire, FeedDemon, Inbox, and Go! are now free

NewsGator, the company that gobbled up the two most popular feed readers on both the Mac and Windows platforms, has just announced that they are releasing NetNewsWire, FeedDemon, NewsGator Inbox, and NewsGator Go! as freeware.

In case you need to be told: This is huge news.

NetNewsWire, from the data I’ve ever been privy to, is the most popular feed reading application on any platform period. Being a product built solely for the Macintosh, that is saying something. FeedDemon, by far the leader in the Windows feed-reading market, is now also free.

This move by NewsGator is a rather obvious move to increase the number of possible subscribers to their enterprise services - and I think it is a great move. They’ve essentially just cut out every possible competitive product by offering their applications for free while retaining some more “pro” features (like syncing between computers for instance) to their paying customers.

Just when I was getting settled in with Google Reader I now find myself doing two things I actually never thought I’d be doing again: 1) Downloading NetNewsWire 3.1 for free, and 2) Looking through NewsGator’s services to see if they’re worth laying down a few dollars for.

Nice move NewsGator - hats off. Via Brent Simmons - creator of NetNewsWire.
