Phantom Vibration Syndrome

Recently, I decided I would stop using my cell phone for a couple days. The decision was made after my phone decided to take a dive in a puddle and stop responding. I thought it would be a nice experiment to see if I could go a day without my cell phone.

I’d had it happen before. I’d think my phone was vibrating when it really wasn’t. The side of my leg would feel like my phone was going off every once in a while during class or while I was sitting on my couch. But this time was different. Not only did it feel like my phone was constantly vibrating, but it was much more apparent. When it first started, it was just a slight vibration. Now, it feels as if the spot on my leg is constantly vibrating. I know I have no phone there, but it still feels like it’s ringing.

I think it’s kind of crazy how the body will adjust or change because of such a small vibration. I’m not even sure if it’s completely physical or if it’s also an anxiety/mental issue. It got me thinking about other parts of my life, and whether I’d have the same kind of reaction to the loss of the internet, my computer, or some other gadget. This USA Today article is really old, but talks a bit about the “condition.”

I think after this I might just try to go without any form of technology for a couple days, or at least choose a specific one and see if my perception or anything like that changes. Have you noticed “phantom vibrations” or anything similar resulting from your specific use of technology?
