Ask the Geeks: Round one

Yesterday I begged and pleaded for some questions for our first Ask the Geeks. Thanks to those that provided the following questions.

“Riddle me this, Ubergeeks: Will PowerPC web browser plugins work in a Universal browser on an Intel Mac?” — Chris Coleman

Yes. Fortunately almost anything compiled for PowerPC processors will run on the Intel platform under the power of Rosetta. The only problem is many of such will not run very efficiently. You asked specifically about using the PDF Plugin within Camino - and I gave it a shot and it appears to run fine.

Update, an aside: You’ll need to “run the plugin in Rosetta”. To do this, run Get Info on Camino, and check the box stating “Open using Rosetta”. This will run Camino in Rosetta and make the plugin work.

Though I have yet to figure out why you use Camino.

“In your opinion, what are the main reasons someone might want to use Photoshop for web-design, as opposed to say, Fireworks? I ask this because it seems 99% of designers use Photoshop, but why?” — James Coats

Since your asking for my “opinion”, I’ll provide it. Those that do web-design, or any type of design (or even programming for that matter) want to follow industry standards. Those of us that would like to have work, be able to eat and pay bills, like to follow industry standards for multiple reasons. The first of which is job opportunities. Adobe Photoshop is most definitely an industry standard for design - as is Illustrator. Designers that use Photoshop, compared to those that can not and focus exclusively on Fireworks, will find that they have more jobs available to them. The second reason would be that of compatibility. If your clients, bosses, and colleagues use Photoshop, and you want to create files that they can open, you need to use Photoshop - plain and simple.

Of course, the above are my opinion.

So, what about next week’s Ask the Geeks? Anyone have any more questions?

Ask the geeks: Coming soon

Something new! Want to ask us a question? Do you have the need for some help on a particular problem, topic, application, etc? You can ask us! Ask a question, and we’ll answer it via a post on TUG!

How does it work? Easy. In the comment section of this post, ask a question. And then, we’ll pick one - and one of us that is best suited to answer the question will do so within a few days. We’ll research the topic, find some resources to back up our answers, and we’ll jot down the answer in an easy to understand manner (well, at least we’ll try).

Best of all, it will be completely free. And I don’t mean free like “if you purchase something it will be free”. Its free. Any question, any question at all.

Here some ideas to get you started. You can ask what Chris thinks of a specific album. You can ask a programming question. You can ask Josue how to roll a joint in Costa Rica when all you have is stuff found on a beach! You can ask Mike how to care for a reptile! Anything!!

So, what do you wanna know? Round one will be based on the questions you post now.
