Writing a Wordpress plugin
That’s right, I’m attempting to write my first WordPress plugin. I haven’t had the disctinct pleasure of reading up on or ever attempting to write a plugin so I’m just going to wing it.
Why would I decide to do this? Easy, a friend asked me to. This will be quite the adventure, especially since I hardly use any plugins in any install of WP that I work with.
For those that are curious, this plugin will pull a random category from your list of categories, then display random posts from that category. Yes, I know there are random post plugins out there but they are just for posts. My friend, who just so happens to be Mr. Flaschner from The Blog Studio, and I have looked for plugins that accomplish this task but we haven’t found any.
This would be one of those fun projects that actually serves a purpose. I’ve got the basics down and will post more when I’m ready for some feature suggestions.
Simple Photos Plugin 0.1
I’m posting this plugin simply because I hope there are a few people out there that could use it. I had to create this plugin for a client of mine that is using WordPress 1.5 pretty extensively, and I thought that perhaps it could be improved upon by the community.
I’m calling it Simple Photos because it is really an extremely simple concept and it’s execution is just as simple.
This plugin allows you to simply upload a directory of photos to your ‘blog server’ and tell a specific post, using custom fields, to use that directory in your post. Although this plugin is similar to Alex King’s WP-Photos, its not even close to being as well built. If you are looking for a complete photo solution for WordPress 1.5, there are many alternatives to this one.
That being said, I do think that this plugin could be useful to those looking for some of the functionality that this holds. I’ve installed this simple photo plugin on TUG.n to show a simple example of what you could do.
I may improve on this as my client needs, and then post the updates here, but I don’t think I will be doing any updates to this plugin personally. Perhaps the community could improve this plugin greatly depending on your specific needs. Please trackback this post if you do.
You can download version 0.1 of Simple Photos Plugin here.
FlickIt 0.1.2
Last of the 0.1s for sure. Probably the last time I will announce, via TUG, about a FlickIt release. Subscribe to the ChanceCube RSS feed to keep yourself up-to-date on anything that sprouts from that ever-growing culture of creativity.

Update to FlickIt
A small point release update which will help us solve some problems going forward, as well as improve performance. Flickr, and their API, are maturing all the time - so expect point releases like this to happen each time Ludicorp depreciates a method call or response.
In a grand display of FlickIt’s capabilities, here are a few of my latest photos.
You can view more of my lovely photos on my Flickr userpage.
Delicious things elsewhere
I’m now using my personal del.icio.us account to power the Elsewhere Links. Which means that the RSS feed for the Elsewhere Links has changed, so be sure to update your feed readers.
I highly recommend using LinuxBrit’s WordPress delicious plugin. I’m using that to display the last 10 Elsewhere Links on TUG.n’s homepage. I thought I’d have to edit anything I found, but this simple plugin does everything I needed it to, so I highly recommend giving it a shot.
ChanceCube: FlickIt
Do you use Flickr? Do you use WordPress? Then you should be using FlickIt.
Now its easier than ever to post photos, hosted on Flickr, to your WordPress blog.
