New diet, starts tomorrow
For those of you that used to follow my weight log, I’m starting up a new diet with a few friends. Head on over to my personal site to check it out, and subscribe. Also, if you’d like to join in, drop me a note.
Week three weight update
I’ve been on my diet for three weeks. And it has become apparent to me that my lack of focus for this diet has dwindled to the point where I actually gained weight this week. I am back up to 222lbs. A gain of 4 pounds and an overall loss of 7lbs. since the beginning.
I do not consider this a failure, I simply see it as further impetus to focus my efforts even more. I will not let this beat me. I glad that my experience thus far has not been all roses, since that would lead me to believe that this process was “easy”. This week, I will be focusing on getting the regular exercise that I am lacking and continuing to refine my diet.
On a side note, all of us here at TUG would like to congratulate A. Nasir of Stompy.org (regular TUG reader and contributor) for completing his goal of running the London 10k. Great job Stompy, take care of those nipples.
I’m stuffed
Literally.
As you may or may not know, I’m a Canadian boy. This weekend marked our Thanksgiving holiday and my trip home to enjoy it was a resounding success, in a way. You see, although I may not be in the same league as Colin or Chris, I still have my troubles with the “developer 15″ as it is most commonly called. For those not in the know, it can be summarized as this:
Upon entering the computer or web industry as either a programmer or technician much time is spend with little or no physical activity (other than leaving the desk for meetings or food/bathroom breaks). The sudden removal of exercise and activity combined with the sudden increase of energy sustaining caffeine and junk food, exponentially increases the body mass of said programmer or technician.
Obviously the holidays are both a blessing and a curse. The food was great but I had to actively think about what I should eat as opposed to what I wanted to eat. The success I referred to earlier was my decision to avoid the pop and limit the butter and gravy intake. The reason it wasn’t a complete success? It’s Thanksgiving, and holidays suck for sticking to a diet.
I’ve been actively working towards changing my diet, especially after my doctor told me my cholesterol was too high — that was a year ago. I’ve successfully changed my diet enough that no medication was needed and my cholesterol is now in the normal range. Victory number 1.
With each victory comes another challenge. So, challenge number 2:
- Continue to change diet to remove most junk food such as chips, pop, unhealthy snack foods
- Create and adhere to an exercise plan
Okay, challenge accepted. I’ve been completely inspired by Colin’s tremendous success with his diet and exercise plan. Every time I mention how well he’s doing he responds with “you should do it too.” It’s even worse when we’re video chatting and I’m sitting there eating a Dairy Queen Blizzard while Eliza and Colin sit and make fun of me.
Well, consider this my formal acceptance to join the ranks of the dieters. We must prove, once and for all, that geeks can look good.
Now I just need to find myself a decent pair of jogging shoes. Where did I put those car keys?
Week two weight update
I only lost roughly 2 pounds this week. My total weight is almost 218lbs. Does this mean that me not blogging daily my progress directly effects my level of effort? I think so. This week, I will try harder.
If the hunger isn’t there, is the diet still working?
Yesterday I had cravings, but I wasn’t hungry. I could eat, but didn’t have to. I’m wondering though, if the hunger itself is starting to subside, is the diet still working?
My Brother called me and said “I think I can actually feel my body eating its own fat.”. I could not agree with him more. During my first week, I could literally feel my body adjusting to the diet, and I have to admit that it did feel like it was eating the fat away. Yesterday, and so far today, I have not felt that.
Week one weight update
One week ago today I started my diet. Although I’ve wanted to attempt this for a little while now, I was motivated on a recent vacation after talking to my Brother, and so we both decided to take a stab at it.
Last Sunday I weighed in at 229 pounds. Here is what happened over the course of this week:
- Day one: Is the first day always the hardest?
- Day two: Here comes the hunger
- Night two: Sparks flew, emotions ran high
- Day three: I’m actually full
- Day four: Eating my “big meal” in the middle of the day makes me feel like one of Pavlov’s dogs at night
- Day five: As the hunger subsides my minds-eye already thinks I’m skinny
- Day six: I could have cheated today, but not doing so makes me stronger
I’ve been through a lot over the last week, but it has been well worth it. I feel that I know have decent command over my body and mind, and I now have what it takes to take this to the finish.
After 7 days on the diet, I lost 10 pounds. I now weigh 219.4 pounds. Expect further updates each and every day, and also a new weight update next Sunday.
Oh, and my brother Peter set up his own Weight log. So watch him to see his progress as well.
